Raise your hand if you can remember when our choices in Savannah for fresh bread were Back in the Day and Harris Baking Company in the ground floor of the Drayton Tower? Yes, we remember too. That was nearly a decade ago.
Since then, we’ve had the good fortune of having some quality bakeries come on line in Savannah. And some doing great things out of their homes. Our Best Bakery award is the most difficult to pick. Our tops are all excellent in their own way.
Gottlieb’s Bakery, of course, enjoys legendary status among the old timers in Savannah. After all, it was around for 90 or so years before it close. Anyone who grew up in Savannah has a Gottlieb’s story. Brothers Michael and Laurence who re-opened their family bakery Midtown Savannah can tell you they’ve heard them all. Multiple times.
What they are also doing is an exceptional job of mixing Gottlieb’s historic qualities with some new ideas to attract a new generation of Gottlieb’s fans. Laurence largely handles the overnight shifts and baking. Michael is constantly tweaking a lunch menu that regularly includes one of the best burgers in the city. No joke.
Earlier this year, they started dinner service and most recently Brunch.
The chocolate chewies were same as they ever were at Gottlieb’s. At the bakery or on Saturday mornings at the Forsyth Park Farmers Market. All of the baked goods are excellent. But the creativity going on in the kitchen is what gives them the nod this year. No, it’s not all baked good, but at the end of day, it’s still a bakery. A pretty bad ass one if you ask us.
