Sunday Quick Bites

Some news, notes and great eats for a Sunday evening

*There’s a new chef at The DeSoto Savannah hotel. There’s already a new menu at Edgar’s Proof and Provision. The Chicken and Fried Green Tomato Sliders are outstanding. One of Savannah’s more underrated lunches is outdoors there along Liberty Street when the weather is cooperating.

*The Black Rabbit, already a popular sandwich shop/bar at Barnard and Henry Streets has begun Sunday brunch service. Today was their first day. Nothing fancy for now. Just a few pastries and quiche from our friends at Auspicious Bakery. They will be opening at 11am on Sundays going forward for Brunch.

*They are offering both sweet and savory. The orange walnut scone and chocolate croissant I had today were delicious.

*Speaking of delicious, St Neo Brasserie inside the brand new The Drayton Hotel. High end seafood comes to Savannah. Though not inexpensive, it is outstanding. I have a piece coming on them this week. And oh by the way, their new basement bar is gorgeous. It is open Tuesday-Saturday beginning 5pm.

*We also have a quick hit story about a slice of chocolate cake you need to put on your short list downtown Savannah.

*Restaurant Weeks season: Charleston’s is running now (Some GREAT restaurants on that list). Tybee Island’s begins on the 23rd through February 1st.

*Hilton Head Island’s Restaurant Week is only 6 days long. February 3-9, 2020.

*There was an absolutely full house at Papaya Thai and Sushi in Pooler Friday night. Things have gone so well for them, they are weeks away from a new location in Richmond Hill. More on that this week.

*Brewed SAV, a beer and sandwich spot at Habersham and 34th streets in Savannah has changed hands less than a year after opening. It is now Mira Mira Coffee. Coffee, beer and BBQ. We haven’t tried the BBQ yet. Plan to very shortly.

*Speaking of coffees, you should go try one of James’ drinking chocolates at his Cup to Cup shop at 140 Abercorn. They are so popular, you are only allowed to have one if you sit at the counter to drink it.

*Our podcast-Shuck It-returns this week. Weekly for now.

*I was told this week that there’s a chef looking around Savannah hoping to open a Latin “Fine Dining” concept. Will it happen? Anyone’s guess at this point. (insert eyeballs emoji)

*11 new vendors this year at the Forsyth Farmers Market. One that stands out so far is Richmond Hill’s Green Spork Cafe and Market. Delicious vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. I had one of their Peanut Butter cookies this weekend and absolutely loved it.

*Speaking of vegetarian fare. Not my first time at Fox and Fig Plant Based Cafe, but it was my first time having the Fox Burger. Ridiculously good as advertised. The good news was after a great workout that morning, I was starving just 2 hours later. That doesn’t happen with traditional burgers.

*The Low Country Home and Garden Show is next weekend at the Savannah Convention Center. Come see us at the Eat It and Like It Cooking Stage. We’ll be there all weekend with some of our chef friends.

*Pie Society in Pooler is having an unlimited bites pie party on the 23rd. $20 gets you sweet and savory pies plus one beer or mimosa. If you love Pie Society (and who doesnt?) this is a great deal. Click here for more.

*The next day (Friday, January 24) is our Fried Chicken and Champagne Dinner at The Lucky Rooster Kitchen and Bar on Hilton Head Island. Click here for more information.

*Also in the Low Country, the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival is sneaking up on us. Coming February 24 through March 1st. All of the events are great and a lot of people already have their favorites but here is a solid ‘insider’ tip. The Sunday Brunch that wraps up the week (March 1st) at Hudson’s on the Docks is one of the underrated events of the festival. It always sells out and is always fantastic. Don’t wait until week of to get your tickets. Click here for more.

*We announced a pop up dinner at Fork and Dagger Latin Diner this morning. January 31st 5:30pm. It’s a 4 course dinner $45. (not a tasting…a full meal) and it’s BYOB. 12 hours later, we only have 7 seats left. Click here for the more information.
