Random Ruminations from the food scene August 2023

Running off at the keyboard while counting down to the kickoff of another football season.

*Desposito’s Seafood has a date when they plan to open to the public. But… they aren’t sharing it with the public. Why? Because if they, for whatever reason, need to move it, they don’t want people to be upset. Because some of you would be, even if you shouldn’t be. I do know the day. I can share that is scheduled for LESS than a month away. Your first peek inside is below.

*The Darling Oyster is chugging away on their space at Franklin Square (Congress at Montogmery). A few days ago I was told they are shooting for mid-Fall. Fingers crossed. What is The Darling? Read all about them and their plans for Savannah here.

*It had been a minute since I stopped in on Chive Sea Bar for one of their lunch specials. Same as it ever was. One of Savannah’s best kept lunch secrets. Pan Seared Snapper and Creamy Risotto for $18. Tough to beat anywhere. Photo below

*OMG Candy, a Charleston-based bulk candy store is now open on Broughton, next door to Ben and Jerry’s near Drayton Street.

*Staying on the sweet side, the one and only Lulu’s Chocolate Bar is expanding to Whitemarsh Island. Read more here.

*Bar Bar in City Market is planning to close their doors on August 26th. Still time for one last cocktail. If you didn’t know, they’ve opened a location on Wilmington Island.

*Thanks to everyone who came to 208 Wine Bar BBQ dinner. Tempest BBQ and Cape Creations Catering crushed an amazing meal. Photo of one course below. Hoison Glazed smoked ribs with soba noodles

*Motown Mondays is a new pop up at The Wayward Lounge inside of The Perry Lane Hotel. 4 different flavor profiles on their Detroit style pizzas. It’s fantastic. Only Monday nights beginning at 5pm until they are all gone.

*Crown and Anchor Pub by Pie Society is coming to Pooler, read more here.

*If you’ve been away for any part of the Summer, Bull Street Taco closed for a couple of weeks to expand their space. It is now double the size. Read more here.

*Meanwhile, they have plans to open a breakfast and lunch spot a half block away on Bull Street at 32nd street. In the space formerly occupied by Bocci on Bull. Read more here.

*Savannah Tequila Company at Plant Riverside is bringing back their monthly tequila pairing dinners. The first is Thursday, August 17th. Read more here.

*St Bibiana at the former Mansion on Forsyth Park is on schedule for mid-late September.

*Incidentally, the hotel that we knew as The Mansion has closed for a massive renovation. When it comes back in February 2024, it will be Savannah’s most beautiful hotel. Hotel Bardo Savannah.

*Podcast: if you missed my conversation with Josh Thomas, find it here. Why are restaurants closing? It’s a must listen if you enjoy eating out.

*Two BBQ festivals coming in back-to-back weeks in October. Saturday October 14th, the 2nd Bourbon and BBQ will happen at Eastern Wharf. Then a week later October 20-22, Coligny Plaza on Hilton Head Island will host a dozen or so pit masters from across the South. 2nd annual Rock-n-Ribs 2 is part BBQ throw down, part concert. This year’s headliner is .38 Special. FIND MORE HERE.

*I’m heartbroken by the announcement that Charleston’s Butcher and Bee, one of my favorite eateries in America is closing at the end of the month. Their Nashville location will stay open.

*Bernie’s Oyster House has left River Street and moved to Pooler. Read more here

*When don’t typically mess with chains around here but Rise Biscuits on Broughton Street has shut their doors. Their mail is piled up inside. There’s been no announcement that they are closed. But there’s also been no announcement that they are on holiday. So there’s that.
