The silver lining around town that comes with restaurants closing is the fact that demand for space remains through the roof. One door closes and almost immediately someone is inquiring about taking on the lease. It’s happening far more than you know.
One particular instance is on Whitemarsh Island where Lulu’s Chocolate Bar is slipping into to the space formerly occupied by J Thomas Kitchen, which closed in June after 5 years.
“Yes, it’s true. We have signed a lease to move into the old J Thomas space on Whitemarsh Island.” is how co-owner Rebecca Freeman responded when we called her to confirm a rumor.
“We are planning to move our baking operation there (It’s currently located on Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah.) We will have all our our production facilities in that space.” she said. “Then, of course, on the dining room side we will have a little 2nd location of Lulu’s Chocolate Bar.“
That means everything you can get downtown including specialty cocktails and desserts. The islands will be able to enjoy it without making their way down to MLK, Junior Blvd in Downtown Savannah.
Lulu’s Chocolate bar has been open in Downtown Savannah for over a decade. They remain Savannah’s gold standard for cocktails and/or desserts after dinner. Or even pre-dinner. Or even middle of a weekend day. Basically all of the time.
The build out is expected to begin very soon with no timetable yet on when they hope to be open.
