Eat It HHI – The Weekend

Daufuskie Island Vibes & Tides: October 18-20, 2019 We are really looking forward to being part of this event at Haig Point on nearby Daufuskie Island.

Gullah food has a unique character and once you’ve tried fresh field peas, oyster gravy, collard greens with smoked turkey wings and slow-cooked grits, you’ll make it a point to seek it out. The cuisine is straight forward – using basic ingredients in recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, learned from memory – a pinch of this and a dash of that is the closest you’ll get to specific measurements.

This event brings together over a dozen top chefs including Alexander Smalls, Mashama Bailey, and Sallie Ann Robinson who will be serving recipes from her new cookbook “Sallie Ann Robinson’s Lowcountry Kitchen: Food and Family Lore from the Country”. Taking the scenic ferry ride from Hilton Head Island will only enhance the experience! www.daufuskieislandvibesandtides.com

Lowcountry VegFest: October 19, 2019 Presented by the Palmetto Plant Eaters Club, the 4th Lowcountry VegFest’s mission is to “foster justice and compassion for all living beings on a healthy planet.” Last year this event attracted 1,200 attendees and organizers anticipate an even bigger turnout this year as more people are adopting a vegan lifestyle.

Sponsors include Whole Foods, Bröö Craft Beer, and popular local restaurants like Delisheeyo and Tio’s Latin American Kitchen along with a multitude of vendors and exhibitors. Featured speakers are award-winning author Colleen Patrick-Goudreau and activist and social entrepreneur Grey.

Hilton Head Island’s own Lowcountry Boil Band is always entertaining with its bluegrass repertoire and banter with the audience. There is no entry fee and the bounce houses are always a way to entice the kids! And when you go, bring along a non-perishable vegan food item to support the Sandalwood Community Food Pantry.

Shelter Cove Community Park is located mid-island on Broad Creek in Towne Center, which is chock full of shops, restaurants and the Veteran’s Memorial.  www.LowcountryVegFest.com

Rockin’ on the Dock: October 19, 2019
This event, presented by Montage Palmetto Bluff, is part of the Historic Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival. The Bluffton Oyster Factory, which is tucked in on the banks May River, is one of a handful of oyster factories on the East Coast where the oysters are still shucked by hand and the plucked straight out of the river freshness and delicious briny flavor are unbeatable.

A Seafood Extravaganza Tasting and music by Naturally Southern will put the “rock” on the dock and the fireworks at dusk will add a touch of magic to the night. An extra bonus is there is no admission fee – food and drink will be available for purchase. www.blufftonartsandseafoodfestival.com
