Some time in Summer of 2018, I looked across the landscape and realized just how much more food was on the scene in Savannah, Bluffton and Hilton Head Island than there had been 5 years previous. We talk about it all of the time. As we rolled into the Fall, I took a few minutes to take a tiny bit of inventory how many burgers had been put on menus that weren’t there before.
Not long after that, I realized how many more breakfast sandwiches were in Savannah alone. With 2 new biscuit shops and The Grey Market opening within blocks of each other.
At some point I decided to make something of an unofficial attempt at trying as many burgers as I could get to across the region. Not just Savannah. This ‘tour’ would include the Low Country as well. Even some I enjoy when I am on the road.
The Burger Tour episode was an update on our travels. It’s not a ranking. It’s not anything except a list of burgers we have eaten and liked. The tour is on-going. So if we haven’t gotten to your favorite spot, I’ve got plenty of time to do so. Meanwhile, here are the burgers that appeared on our Burger Tour episode. Below I will list the burgers we’ve tried since we started the tour.
Smash Burger at Palmetto Market or XO Lounge at OMNI Hilton Head Resort. Pretty simple and straightforward. Delicious. I’ve loved this guy actually for years.
Marley’s Shrimp and Burger Shack – Hilton Head Island Smallish but delicious. Only 10-14 seats in the place. Plenty more seats outside. They’ve got a nice diverse menu of items, salads and seafood, but the burgers are fabulous.
The Jesse Blanco Burger – Lucky Rooster Kitchen and Bar – Hilton Head Island. The burger came to be by accident. Two beef patties, chicken skins, smoked gouda, chipotle aioli, lettuce and thinly sliced jalapeños. As soon as it when on the menu, it became their best seller on Sunday night burger night at Lucky Rooster. And yes, if you are wondering, it is incredibly flattering to have a burger named after me. But if it weren’t over the top amazing, it wouldn’t be here.
OTHERS WE’VE TRIED:
McDonough’s – Savannah
The Grove – Savannah
Moss and Oak (Hyatt Hotel) – Savannah
The Fitzroy – Savannah
Green Truck Pub – Savannah
Harold’s Diner – Hilton Head Island
Hog’s Head Kitchen – Bluffton, SC
The Bluffton Room – Bluffton
Cotton and Rye – Savannah
Emporium Kitchen and Wine Market – Savannah

Try the burger at Rue de Jean. Unusually delicious. Plus you can have an aperitif of pastis!
The Grey Market makes a tasty little burger with their secret comeback sauce. It might be my favorite in town. Hands down my fave in the region is on the lunch menu at The Farm in Bluffton. The flavors change all the time, but the topping ratio on this little gem is always delicious. Maybe we can have them at Strangebird…A girl can always hope.
The best burger in Bluffton can be found at Chow Daddy’s. There is also a location on the island. The Chow Daddy Burger and the Pimento Burger are standouts. Combination of Ground Brisket and Chuck. I’ve had them all including the Bluffton Room which is no slouch.
Great article on “sometimes food can suck”.
Keep up the great work. Your passion for food jumps off the page.
Chicken skins on a burger? The Howlin’ Hound is pretty good.
Howlin Hound won our Foodie Award for Best Burger last year. Don’t knock chicken skins til you try em
You need to take a quick road trip to Brunswick and go to Willie’s Wee Nee Wagon and have the Willie Burger! Two patties on a sub roll with grilled onions. I’m not a big fan of onions, but I like them on this yummy, greasy gem of tasty burger!
I was told the go-to at Willies is the pork chop sandwich.
The breakfast club at Tybee has an amazing burger!!!
Thanks I am a mother and very busy! This helped me alot!
