Vibes and Tides Weekend offers rare Daufuskie Island Experience

Rare indeed.

The average person could probably count on a hand an a half the number of people that they know who have spent any regular amount of time on Daufuskie Island. Those numbers obviously go up if you are native to this area, but so many of us are not.

Heard about Daufuskie? Of course. Many times. Had the opportunity to make a full day of zipping over on a friend’s boat for lunch and live music before returning home? Of course. That’s a large part of the population as well. Now there is one weekend where you can do it all. Yes, of course, and Eat It and Like It. It’s happening October 18, 19 and 20.

If memory serves, Vibes and Tides weekend has been on the discussion table for easily a couple of years now. Yes, Daufuskie might be the most exclusive address in the area, but the idea was to invite non-residents to enjoy a weekend of great food and drink in a spectacular setting. Similar to Palmetto Bluff’s exclusive Music to Your Mouth event that happens every November.

Vibes and Tides is maybe the most ’boutique’ event we will have in the region. It will be held on the island’s exclusive Haig Point property. Lined with beautiful homes, a historic light house and seemingly endless miles of beachfront.

Five exclusive events over 3 days. Featuring some of the best culinary talent we have in the area. Saturday night’s ‘main event’ Heaven Blue Dinner will feature Beard Award winners Mashama Bailey of The Grey and Alexander Smalls. They will be joined by renowned chefs Benjamin Dennis, Roosevelt Brownlee, Matthew Raiford and Daufuskie native chef and cookbook author Sallie Ann Robinson. You can read more about Sallie Ann and her brand new cookbook here.

Of course the cuisine will be heavily influenced by the region’s Gullah culture, but it would be a stretch to say that is all that will be offered. You can expect seafood to drive the boat here, of course, but in my short discussions with a few participating chefs, I’m certain there will something for everyone.

“We just want to share the island’s offerings with everyone.” says Charleston based chef Benjamin (BJ) Dennis. Vegetables straight from our farms, seafood caught right out there.”

The common theme is simple food. Done very very well.

The Beach Club at Haig Point will host Friday night’s event

Now time for a confession. When I heard that this event was going to happen, I raised an eyebrow and thought tickets would be astronomical. Well, the joke was on me. Tickets start at $65 very affordable dollars.

The part I’m looking forward to the most, is the intimacy in such a beautiful location. Admittedly, before last week I had never visited Haig Point. It is every bit as peaceful and beautiful as I expected. Riding along the Daufuskie coastline in a golf cart gives you a sense of how serene this area is. Especially when you glance across the Sound and see Sea Pines Harbour Town in the distance.

I was also very pleased to hear that numbers are being kept very low in order to enhance guests experiences. The largest event, I believe, will host 250 people. Yes, that’s exclusive. It’s going to a great time October 18-20, 2019.
