Tybee’s North Beach Grill – The same but different this year

We’ve come to learn over the years that few things put a messenger’s well-being in danger more than any announcement of change. Some people will tell you that Change is Life’s Gift (raises hand). Other’s will tell you that if you even think about changing something they love, you might just get hurt.

Of course, we are teasing-maybe-but we can tell you that change is definitely on the horizon at Tybee Island’s North Beach Bar and Grill, one of the most popular eateries on that island.

On Monday, NBG announced that they would be re-opening for 2020 on Wednesday, February 12th. Today, we spoke with Kathryn Williams, co-owner and General Manager of North Beach Bar and Grill. She confirmed the date and a few other things you can look forward to as we roll into the Spring/Summer season on Tybee Island.

“We’ve always stayed open during the winter.” Kathryn said. “This time, we wanted to get some things done and buy some new equipment. We did a deep cleaning and are in the process of re-building the deck.”

The deck she speaks of is the most popular spot to hang at NBG. Soon (though not for a month or so) it will be covered. Still an outdoor seating area, but there will now be protection from the elements. Brutal sunshine in the Summers and rain. Which will come in especially handy trying to protect live entertainment.

“The entire deck is being rebuilt. The bar will now be in the middle of the deck instead of to the side.” She says. “We actually are going to increase our seating by about 40 seats doing this.”

The roof/deck/bar build out is about 3-4 weeks away from completion, but the interior dining room will re-open on the 12th, with some minor tweaks to their approach in food.

“I finally convinced George after all these years,” she says “to add a few fried items to the menu. We’re bringing back popcorn crawfish and seafood fritters and a few other things.”

“People don’t realize that it takes more skill to sautée a nice piece of fish than it does to drop it into a fryer. But that’s what people want. So we will offer it.” Kathryn says.

Also new this year will be sides on an a la carte basis. “That’s primarily because of waste.” she says. “So many people order a sandwich and don’t touch the sides. I’ve had people tell me they just don’t like red beans and rice.”

To each, his or her own, I suppose. Even if they are wrong. 🙂

Hours of operation for the next few weeks will also be tricky. They will be open Wednesday-Sunday from 11:30 until…

The “until” is very much open ended for now, but expect it to be around 7pm. Give or take some nippy gusts. “Once the sun goes down in the winter, it can feel cold!” Kathryn says. “But if we get lucky with some weekend weather and people are staying, we will stay open.”

Once the roof and deck are completed, they will go 7 days a week.
