For those of us that drive by on the regular, it’s hard to see any real progress down at the Eastern Wharf project along President’s Street. The Thompson Hotel dominates the landscape. Their outlets Fleeting, Bar Julian and Stevedore Bakery are all excellent, but the rest of the food and beverage infrastructure has been slow to fill in. Now we finally have more.

Squirrel’s Pizza, yes the same Squirrel from the Starland District, is set to open a 2nd location Friday at Eastern Wharf. The outdoor eats location will serve as a primary source of quick food and drinks in the grassy area between the hotel and the Savannah River.

Owner Chris Dickerson tells me the approach here will be a little different than what they do on Bull Street. This will be primarily NY style pies and Detroit style “deep dish” pizzas. There will also be slices available. Chris loves to play with pizza, so it will not be limited to that, but for starters, that’s the foundation. There will also be chicken wings and other munchies.

Squirrel’s will also feature a Beer Garden and full liquor bar. I suspect this space will be very busy during Eastern Wharf concert series events, which have drawn well but will undoubtedly do better now that there are more options for eats and drinks while enjoying live music.

The scene is open and spacious. Lots of chairs and umbrellas to enjoy a few of the River or the Thompons behind you. Because as of now, there isn’t much else down there to look at. There will be though and when this area finally fills in, it will be a destination no doubt.

For now, enjoy the pizza and beers. Beginning Friday. You’ll eat it and like it.
