Savannah’s Ordinary Pub closed following structure collapse
While Savannah begins its post-Helene clean up, largely made up of broken branches, blocked roadways and power outages, some local residents are dealing with a lot worse than that.
Just before 3am on Friday morning, Savannah Fire responded to a building collapse in the 200 block of West Broughton Street between Barnard and Jefferson Streets. The building is home to multiple residents including the very popular The Ordinary Pub in the basement.
According to Savannah Fire, the roof collapsed into the 3rd floor, which then collapsed into the 2nd floor. Friday morning officials were on the scene. Several posters citing the building as ‘condemned’ have been placed on windows at street level.
Obviously, the building’s basement occupant- The Ordinary Pub- is closed for the time being. Midday Friday, they posted their own update to social media explaining what they have been told would be next steps toward getting their restaurant re-opened at some point. They wanted to clarify that the term ‘condemned’ doesn’t at all mean that the building will be closed permanently and torn down. There is obviously a lot of work to be done to the building’s upper floors, but once a series of inspections deem it safe, they will be able to re-open their space.
How long that will take, however, is the great variable in all of it.
The Ordinary Pub is also owner of Common on Broughton, one of Broughton Streets best restaurants. That facility is unaffected and open for business.
In the meantime, one of the collapsed building’s residents has lost everything but her two cats and is in search of a place to stay. The Ordinary has started a collection to help her relocate. Anyone interested in helping can donate via Pay Pal to Mickey Hickey (nickname) she is co-owner of The Ordinary Pub.
