It’s been said more than a few times that the business landscape will change during 2020. The global pandemic and shut down will not only affect how many businesses operate but will also impact how many local businesses can continue.
Several restaurants have closed in the area as a result of the events of this year. Now you can add Savannah’s Sandfly BBQ to that list.
“It’s bittersweet.” Sandfly owner Keith Latture said during a recent chat. “We were there just about 5 years.”
Latture says the downtown location never really caught on like they expected to. They were counting on a larger take-out business. “We did OK.” he said.
Ultimately, running a 2nd location across town from your very successful flagship is a lot of work for just “OK.”
The decision to not return was also fueled by the creation of Latture’s brand new Sundown Lodge on Wilmington Island. A casual seafood/comfort food spot on Johnny Mercer Blvd.
The renovation of the space formerly occupied by Little Italy Italian Restaurant was thorough. The decor is kitchy and comfortable. The food is great and features fried chicken, seafood, a burger and more. It is now open by reservation only.
The Streamliner where Sandfly formerly sat downtown Savannah is owned by the Savannah College of Art and Design. No word on what may ultimately go in there.
