Random Ruminations November: Holiday Season Edition

-This is your last week (Tuesday/Wednesday only) to catch Chef Chris Hathcock at his Odd Gai Pop Up in Savannah. He’s been holding it for weeks at the Strangebird Diner in Savannah’s Victorian District. Barnard and Henry Streets. They get going at 5pm both days. Tuesday and Wednesday only. He’ll drop a menu on Instagram as we get closer to Tuesday.

-Big headline this week, in Savannah anyway, is the announcement of a new bagel shop set to open on State Street in the Historic District. Site of the old Debi’s Restaurant. Read more about that here. They should open in 2-3 weeks.

-I got a look at the Christmas Market at Plant Riverside over the Thanksgiving Holiday. It’s beautiful. They did a really nice job with it. If you are a fan of European style Christmas markets with unique gifts and booths…take some time to stop by this holiday season. It’s set up along the waterfront at Plant Riverside.

-Speaking of PRD, there are a ton of Holiday Happenings during December. A lot of it is free. See a complete list here.

-Pacci Italian Kitchen at The Brice announced their plans to bring back their monthly Supper Club dinner. It will be held the 3rd Sunday of the month. November’s was Thanksgiving themed, of course. But they will be held every month. Find more information here.

-Not to be outdone are the holiday happenings at The Alida Hotel. Their Alpine Village at Lost Square is a must see.

Collins Quarter at Forsyth Park is hosting a Holidays in the Park event next Saturday, December 2nd. Three course menu is $55 plus tax. Music will begin at 5pm. DJ Jose Ray kicks in at 7:45pm. Reservations are recommended.

Toast is Savannah’s newest Brunch spot. The Charleston-based chain is now open at Broughton and Bull Street in the heart of the Historic District.

-Meanwhile, far away from the heart of town is Port Wentworth. Hope to the area’s newest comfort food spot. Georgia Comfort Kitchen is near the intersection of Highway 21 and I-95. I’ll be visiting them soon. They offer a daily lunch buffet featuring all of your favorites.

-If you missed it a couple of weeks ago, Big Bon Bodgea at Bull and 37th has brought back their pizza program. Savannah Square Pizzas are Detroit style and delicious. They are only available after 3pm thought. Big Bon does bagels during the day.

-In the Low Country, I’m personally inviting Beaufort, Sun City, Hardeeville or anyone else in the area to come join us on Friday, December 8th. I’ll be at the Pat Conroy Literary Center for a discussion about food, the food scene in the region and of course, my book, Savannah Food Crawls. We’ll get going at 5pm and reservations are recommended. This event is free admission.

-By the way, that book-Savannah Food Crawls, has been doing very well. Thanks to all who have purchased. If you haven’t, you can do so here. Signed and unsigned for the same price as you will find it on Amazon.com. They make an excellent Christmas gift.

-Have you checked out our “Mondays with Maggie” Podcast conversations yet? Every Monday, Hilton Head Realtor Maggie Crenshaw and I chat about all the goings on on HHI. Candid chats about meals we’ve had and more. Find them on Apple Pods and Spotify.

-Have you signed up for the newsletter? It’s the BEST way to stay in touch with what is going on food wise in the area. Both sides of the Savannah River. You can sign up free right here.

-Before we go, a quick shout out to one of my favorite restaurants in the State of Georgia. I had dinner at The Optimist in Atlanta a few weeks ago. What a treat that is whenever I can get there. It is, all these years later, my favorite seafood restaurant in Georgia. If you’ve never been, you owe yourself a visit. So very good. Check out those crispy oysters at the top of the page…. Of course, a public thank you to my hosts. The ladies of Coastal Mississippi took me to dinner to discuss 2024. Stay tuned.

Happy Holiday season everyone!
