Random Ruminations: Lowcountry Edition May 2025

Slowcountry BBQ Grill is the name of the new eatery at Coligny Plaza going into the space formerly occupied by Forrest Fire BBQ. The newly adjusted concept will be different in that it will offer much more than BBQ including Fried Chicken and Sandwiches as well. Also gone is the ‘cafeteria style’ grab a tray and slide down service. Guests will now order at the register and food will be brought to your table. Look for it to open in the next week or two. We’ll have much more on it when it does.

Have you heard about the newest pizza truck about to roll out into the area? It’s called Firemost Pizza. They are primarily tavern style pies. There are 3 islanders behind this effort. They were expecting to roll out around Memorial Day, so we expect to see them any time now. We will be sharing their story with you, and tasting some pizza soon enough. Short term, find them on Instagram and Facebook.

Firemost Pizza coming very soon

We’ve also got look at one of Hilton Head Island’s best kept food secrets. Well, it was anyway. Have you checked out Barnacle Bills and the Jahmerican Food Truck? Read all about it here.

*I had lunch at Joelle this month. While I was disappointed there was no pasta on the lunch menu, I did enjoy the Chicken Caprese Sandwich. The star of the lunch, however, were the polenta fries. Outstanding. Oh and the lovely group of ladies I met outside afterwards who were quite curious as to whether or not I had eaten and liked it. Indeed, I had.

*Also had a very enjoyable first time lunch at Pizza and Pints in Tanger Outlets. Solid pie. New York? No. Great beer too selection from our friends at Lincoln and South.

Local Pie’s 3rd location at New Riverside is in progress. They tell me they are hoping to open by August.

Savannah’s Origin Coffee Bar is getting very close to opening their Hilton Head Island location. In fact, they’ve begun hiring a staff, which is usually a sign that they are very close. Origins is one of Savannah’s best (certainly most beautiful) coffee shops. I suspect they will do well on the island as well. They’ll be at 35 N. Main Street near the library. More with them soon.

*Island Icon Orchid Paulmeier of One Hot Mama’s is back on the Food Network this Summer. A new series called BBQ Brawl. Catch it Sunday, June 1st at 9pm.

*Hilton Head Island’s best bakery has re-opened their original spot in Shelter Cove. Hilton Head Social Bakery announced a few days back that they were finally re-opening their much smaller space at Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. A few years back they moved to a larger space on 278 and had kept their original spot for use at a future date. Well now coffee and pastries on the marina are back. One of my favorite secret past times on the island.

We spoke to the folks who are opening the new Parlor Doughnuts in Okatie this Summer. They are hoping for “June or July” before they can welcome everyone in. If I were you, and you are chomping at the bit, I would mentally prepare for July. If it happens sooner, it will be a nice surprise. Yes, a doughnut surprise.

Meantime, I’d never had a Parlor Doughnut before I tried them a few weeks ago. Here’s my review on what you can expect.

I popped in on a new-ish ice cream shop in Beaufort (Lady’s Island) last week. Stellar Ice Cream is very much so. Small Batch and homemade flavors that drop every Wednesday. What you probably don’t know that is that I am very much an ice cream snob. So, given the opportunity to chat with Bonnie, who with her husband, own Stellar, I asked all of the important questions. I had Cookies and Cream, Banana Pudding and Butter Pecan. This stuff is great and a must try if you are headed to or from Hunting Island this Summer. We’ll be chatting with Bonnie some more in a couple of weeks. Meantime, there is no website. Only Facebook and Instagram. Find it and like it.

Stellar’s Ice Cream is made in house and very much….Stellar

Have you ever wondered why we never say anything negative about restaurants? Here’s an 8 minute explanation.

Rodney Scott, the pride of Hemmingway, South Carolina and man behind Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ has a new line of sauces and spices on the market. Read a little more about that and my visit with Rodney here.

We made a mad dash across the island in search of great margaritas during May. All tolled, I’m fairly certain I had 10-12. My winners? The Admiral at Hudson’s and the Watermelon Margarita at Cactus Street Cantina. The latter was so nice, I had it twice.

Wine Time in Old Town is very much known for their wine selection, but their food flies under the radar. It’s great. Flatbreads and salads mostly plus so charcuterie boards. All of it is delicious. Their best kept secret? Wednesday night pasta night. One pasta dish beginning at 5pm. Those who know, know. You should try it. Their 2nd location set to open in the Washington Square development later this Summer.

If you are in Bluffton and like to come to Savannah for a good lunch, the Cuban Sandwich at Casa Guava on Drayton Street is the best Cuban for 100 miles. (photo below) I’d say more, but ain’t nobody got time for that research. This one is simply over-the-top outstanding and well worth the drive. Another quiet spot downtown that you should know about if you don’t is Urban Deli. Far away from the the crowds, it sits quietly on a corner facing Troup Square downtown. Look ’em up.

The Cuban sandwich at Casa Guava is as good as it looks

Cassandra’s Kitchen in the Bluffton Promenade is hosting an event on June the 10th featuring a few light bites and a cocktail from Burnt Church Distillery. Tickets are only $50. Find more information here.

Read about that and other events on our events page at eatitandlikeit.com. See them all here.

Among the listings are two dinners we are hosting this Summer. The Eat It and Like It Dinner Series is coming July 20th and August 24th to the spectacular 13 Secrets Maison in Savannah facing Forsyth Park. See more about them both here. Tickets for the July 20th dinner are almost gone. Fewer than 5 remain as of May 30th.

Got anything about food in the Lowcountry you want to share? Something we should know? We are always listening. tips@eatitandliket.com
