Random Ruminations June 22nd

Running off at the keyboard while trying to keep cool on the 2nd day of Summer.

*The big story this week around Savannah is the opening of Squirrel’s Pizza in the Starland Area. Bull Street near 39th to be exact. The food is good. Cocktails are outstanding. It’s a beautiful space, too. You need to try it for yourself. Take a look at their menu here. Pies run $13-$19.

*One thing is certain. The pizza game around here is evolving. Squirrel’s is open now. Kyle Jacovinco’s Pizzeria Vittoria Napoletana should open next month. Read our comparison between the two here.

*That’s to say nothing about the pizza venture going in on Habersham at Duffy in Savannah’s Victorian District. That will be ‘artisan’ pizza as well, brought to you buy the same creative minds behind Green Truck Pub. That’s easily a year away.

*Oh and by the way, Domino’s Pizza is opening on Abercorn Street downtown. Near Bolton. Right behind the Mansion on Forsyth Park. There goes the neighborhood, right?

*Speaking of fast food, we typically don’t do chains, but this was too disgusting to pass up. KFC is rolling out a Chicken and Cheeto sandwich in July. I am convinced Taco Bell and KFC share a test kitchen full of 20 somethings smoking weed.

*I’m a fan of pretty much everything Ele Tran and Chef Sean do. But I had maybe the best lunch I’ve ever had at one of their restaurants last week at the new Coco and Moss. Corner of Congress and Barnard. Fabulous ‘Warm Bowl.” More on that this week.

*Speaking of Ele and the Chef, their latest space “Flock to the Work’ is taking shape on Whitaker Street between Congrees and Broughton. Right across the street from Circa 1875.

*Save the date. Eat It and Like It’s Summer Restaurant Weeks are coming. July 18 through August 11th. Presented by The Heritage Bank, it will be a fabulous line up. Including Emporium Kitchen and Wine Market, Savannah Spirits and Kitchen (new name yes) and The Grove. Read more here.

*We got a peek inside the space that will eventually become Savannah Technical College’s downtown bakery/restaurant campus building. 7 West Bay Street. In front of the downtown Hyatt Hotel. Three stories of instruction, creation and of course eating and liking. Building is circa 1850. So much original detail in there. It’s going to be gorgeous when it is done. In about 18-24 months.

*Stay in the loop of course and find out everything as it happens. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Of course the best way to stay in the loop is via our newsletter. Sign up here.

*Did you hear about the 4 course dinner at Prohibition Savannah next Wednesday? A great deal. Read more about it here. 4 courses, each with a beverage pairing for $70. See menu here.

*The Cuban at The Black Rabbit. Barnard and Henry. Solid. In fact, all of the sandwiches are. German style potato salad made in house is fabulous. It’s the PERFECT spot for a quick lunch meeting without fighting ‘downtown’ traffic.

*In the Low Country, our friends at Sand Bar have finally opened Carolina Crumbs and Coffee bar right next door at Coligny Plaza. Good looking space, right across the street from the beach.

*Speaking of right across the street from the beach, the best Margarita I’ve had on the island is at Sand Bar. If there is a better one, let me know. tips@eatitandlikeit.com
