Random Ruminations from the food scene – September 2023

Running off at the keyboard while enjoying the fool out of the first two official weeks of football season. What a ride so far.

*Congratulations to everyone at Brochu’s Family Tradition on being named to Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurant for 2023. A fantastic honor and if you’ve been there, certainly no surprise. See the full list here.

*My new book, Savannah Food Crawls hits the street on October 1st. It is very visual list of 14 curated ‘walk abouts’ in and around Savannah’s Historic District. The Starland District as well. It is now available for pre-sale via Amazon. We are planning a series of events and dinners to promote the book in the Fall. More on that very soon.

*Three small restaurants are currently in the works downtown. Two on MLK, Jr. Blvd and one on River Street. They are all being built out by the same person, at roughly the same time. That’s a large project. More on that soon.

*If you missed it, you were probably on holiday in Norway. Desposito’s Seafood opened a couple of weeks ago in Thunderbolt and has gotten really good reviews. Their plan was to open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, but that proved to be a little on the ambitious side, staff wise. They are open 4p-9pm during the week for now (lunch is coming) and staying open a little later on weekends with live music outside. As one person told me recently “that is going to be a spot. We loved it.” I don’t disagree.

*I had a great chat recently with Savannah chef John Benhase. We talked about a few things, his pop up dinner coming on September 18th at Late Air (menu below), expansion at Starland Yard-read more on that here, and his views on where Savannah’s food scene sits right now. You can hear it all on the latest episode of our podcast here. Or subscribe to the podcast on Apple or Spotify.

*Speaking of Podcast – We have realllly big news we’ve been sitting on for a minute. A formal announcement will come later. We’ve agreed to a content collaboration with Plant Riverside District to start producing our podcasts there at their District Live Studios. Very exciting stuff. Much more later.

*And speaking of PRD, they have a Gospel Brunch this Sunday –find more here– and their 2nd Tequila pairing dinner at Savannah Tequila Company next Thursday the 21st. Find more here.

*Also on the 21st – The Taste of Pooler at National Museum of the Mighty 8th Air Force. 5:30pm-8:30pm See you there.

*On Saturday the 23rd, the Hilton Head Island Shrimp Festival will take over Harbourtown for a few hours (1p-4p). Over a dozen chefs participating as well as a dozen or so breweries from across the region. Unlimited bites and sips for one price. Find more here.

*Also on 23rd Malone’s BBQ is hosting a BBQ pop up at Burnt Church Distillery in Old Town Bluffton.

*Also in Old Town, Pomodori, the very popular Hilton Head Island Italian restaurant is on final approach. Look for them to open officially before the end of the month.

*More Italian food, but here in Savannah, Sweet Patricia’s -the neighborhood bakery on Habersham Street, has started doing Italian dinners. Their next one is on September 29th at 6:30pm. Reservation only. You can get more details by calling them: (912 509-7996.

*Klom Klom, a Thai-Asian concept brought to you by our friends at PJ’s Thai downtown is now open Midtown Savannah on Hodgson Memorial Drive. See more here.

*If you missed the announcement, our television show has moved over to WJCL on Sundays, 12:30pm right before your NFL Sunday begins. Season 14 began on September 10th. Check us out. More info on how to stream the show next week.

*Also on television, back in June I participated in a Savannah episode of a new show called Street Somm. It’s a wine enthusiasts travels around the country pairing wine with street food. We had a blast. Their stops include New York, San Francisco, Houston, Miami, Chicago, and Savannah. The series premieres on September 25th. The Savannah episode will drop on October 9th. More on that soon.

*Rock n Ribs on HHI October 19-22nd. About a dozen pit masters from all over country converging on Hilton Head Island for 3 days. The main event is on Saturday, October 21st, with live music featuring headliner .38 Special. Find more here.

*Spoke to chef Daniel at Perry Lane this week… Motown Mondays at The Wayward Lounge downtown has been crushing. Exceptional Detroit Style pizzas, every Monday night beginning at 5pm until they are gone.
