News and Notes from the Savannah Food Scene October 7th

Food News and Notes for the Fall.  Emptying out the notebook waiting for Summer weather to finally get out of here.

*The collaboration we told you about a couple of weeks ago between Big Bon Bodega and Pizza guru Jay Langfelder opened this week. Wednesday through Saturday nights only.  I was invited to another trial run last weekend and I can tell you this pizza is not only delicious but going to be extremely popular.  Put it on your short list.

*Leon’s is a sandwich shop on Drayton Street in downtown Savannah a few doors down from Pinkie Master’s. They’ve announced they are closing. Their last day will be October 9th.  I’m really excited about what I’ve been told is going into that space afterward.  If it actually comes to fruition, you will be too. Stay tuned.

*I visited with the guys at Sea Wolf on Tybee Island last week for a segment on our television show and got to try some of their brunch goods. Cajun Cheddar biscuit with poached eggs and maple glazed pork belly? Yes. It was absolutely fantastic.  Their brunch service started 2 weeks ago. Saturday and Sunday only with live Bluegrass on Sunday mornings.   Run, don’t walk.   Also, The Fat Radish downtown is bringing back their Brunch on Sunday October 10th.

*Speaking of our TV show (Saturdays at noon on WTOC) we featured a few Latin eats around town last week.  If you have not tried La Casita Peruvian restaurant in Richmond Hill you absolutely must. Iris Sarria runs the show with her two sons (who are chefs) turning out some wonderful food.  The Lomo Saltado (pictured above) is a Cantonese influenced Peruvian Beef Tenderloin stir fry.  So very good.

*Also worth mentioning is the Cuban revolution going on at Cuban Window Cafe at Duffy and Abercorn downtown Savannah. They’ve only been open about a year and are bursting at the seams with expansion.  Their brand new wrapped food truck is parked out front already. They are planning on a presence on Savannah’s Southside. They are also now open until 9pm. To this point they’ve been closing at 6pm which made any attempt at dinner difficult.  Great news across the board.

*Fleeting is the new restaurant now open at the Thompson Hotel at Savannah’s Eastern Wharf project. Chef Rob Newton is fascinated with Southern Cuisine, even wrote a cook book about it. I had an enjoyable dinner there a couple of weeks ago. Don’t let the fact that it is in a hotel cloud your judgement. They are doing a nice job there.  Bar Julian on the roof there will be serving Brunch soon.

*Speaking of hotel restaurants, the highly anticipated return of Savannah favorite chef Lauren Teague is approaching at the 1540 Room in the DeSoto Hotel.  I haven’t spoken to chef since the Summer, but I believe she is going to do very well there. If you know her Savannah journey, she first made a name for herself here at the Andaz Hotel at Ellis Square. Look for an opening toward the end of the month. Of course, we will keep you posted.
