Lots of Food Talk at Savannah Geekend this Weekend.

For years, Savannah has relied on the Port and Tourism to drive the economic engine. One drive over the Talmadge Bridge into the city and you are reminded very quickly that those factors won’t be changing for quite some time. If ever.

With SCAD as a primary driver, younger generations have been making their move and trying to plant their flags in the region in recent years.  Getting the ‘tekkies’ to stay in Savannah after graduation was more of an impossibility until someone decided to do something about it.  Savannah’s “Creative Coast” was established to help facilitate that growth. It is working.

This weekend, Savannah will host its 10th Geekend event. A 2 day conference  designed to bring entrepreneurs, technologists and other creative leaders together. The goal is pretty simple, to bring passionate people together and discuss growth in Savannah. From the creative department of course.  I will be moderating a panel of some of Savannah’s best. I will also be hosting a seminar about Food Writing in the modern day. You, of course, are invited to attend.

On Friday morning at 11:15 I will moderate a panel titled

Building Food: Creating and Maintaining Food Product Brands in Savannah.

Panelists include: Stratton Leopold, Kay and Ana Heritage of Big Bon Pizza, Geoffrey Repella from Byrd Cookie Company and Kaitlyn Bryant and Mark Ekstrom of Auspicious Bakery.  We will go round and round for an hour about what it takes to be successful in this market when it comes to food.

Also Friday, at 1:30pm I will conduct a 1 hour workshop on Food Writing called Eat It and Write It

Everyone thinks food writing is 90% eating and 10% writing. How hard can that be, right? Join us for an interactive discussion about all of the things you should know about that career move you’ve been contemplating. You won’t be disappointed.

Geekend is a two day event, both Friday and Saturday at the brand new Cultural Arts Center in Downtown Savannah at Ogelthorpe and Montgomery Streets across from the Savannah Civic Center. For more information and a full list of workshops and seminars click here.
