Eat It and Like It – Going Green

Thanks to all that joined us for our environmentally friend edition of Eat It and Like It.  We tell people all of the time that we aren’t, nor have we ever considered ourselves a ‘Restaurant Review Show’. This episode is a tiny example of that. The issues that affect restaurants that are also important to consumers are topics we love to tackle. Sometimes we wish we had more than 30 minutes to tell the stories.

In any event, this episode is unlikely to have you driving 70 miles for a pastrami sandwich, but we hope that it will give you pause the next time you order takeout or reach for the straw that isn’t sitting at your table.  As with any issue, if we all do a little bit, we can absolutely make a difference.  Here are the spots we featured, in the order that they appeared.

Local Pie – Hilton Head Island and Bluffton   There’s a good bit of pizza in the Low Country. There’s actually a good bit of quality pizza in the area as well. Local Pie is on the list. Equally as important is their dedication to being environmentally friendly. All of their take-out packaging is made from recycled materials. Costs can crawl up quite a bit, but they’ve been doing it since the day they opened. When you consider how many pizzas are purchased to go, then you realize how much more money they are spending on those materials. Very much worthy of your support as a result.

The Sentient Bean – The Bean, as it is known to locals, is one of the originals in the area when it comes to being environmentally friendly. 17 years they’ve been in business and as we mentioned in our show, before they could really afford bio-degradable cups, they were offering a discount to anyone who brought in their own mugs for coffee.  For years, many many did. Now they are just one of many in town that care about our footprint on mother earth.

Coffee Fox/Fox and Fig/Foxy Loxy – The “Fox” coffee empire in Savannah continues to grow (now up to 4 locations in and around downtown Savannah) and their dedication to being environmentally friendly grows with them. With so many locations, they consume a ton of disposable items.  So they chose to make them all bio-degradable. They were also the first in the area to get rid of plastic straws.  They’ve gone to paper and only by request. If you are really dedicated to the project, then you can purchase a stainless steel straw for $1. It comes with a tiny brush for cleaning and makes you and the environment bffs.

A few others:

FISH – Hilton Head Island  FISH Hilton Head Island is actually owned by the same folks that own and operate Local Pie.  Paper straws and recycled materials to go as well.

Green Truck Pub – Savannah.  Savannah’s go to for grass fed burgers has been environmentally friendly for years.

Spanky’s -River Street Savannah. If we want to be entirely truthful, it’s kind of hard to imagine anything on River Street being environmentally friendly.  However, Spanky’s and the Live Oak Restaurant Group have taken a huge step.  They carry straws, yes, but they are only issuing them upon request. That is very likely to cut down on consumption rather dramatically down there. And as we mentioned, every little bit helps.

Have any others you’d like us to know about that are doing their part in the area?  shoot us note at tips@eatitandlikeit.com

  1. Really like the show, but with the numerous new restaurants in Savannah, it would be nice to see more restaurant reviews….
