Dog Day What to Dos….

Things are different around here in the summer. The kids are in camps, you are either about to leave or just getting back from some time of vacation, or you’ve chosen to take some down time to make some needed repairs around the house. Routines are busted.

It gets so warm around here, that outdoor activities generally slow to a crawl. nevitably most of us ask ourselves “What’s going on around town?” The Savannah Bananas continue to provide their fans with quality entertainment, and we all have our favorite watering holes to grab a frosty beverage and enjoy a view of a body of water of some kind. But what else is going on? Here’s a short list of what to-do’s to fill your summer until football season rolls around.  Though I am currently thoroughly enjoying 2018 World Cup.

*1540 Room’s Charcuterie and Cocktails – Poolside at The DeSoto. – July 5th, 7:00pm  I wish I could call this one of Savannah’s best kept secrets, but the word is getting out. Executive Chef Kyle Jacovino’s charcuterie is not only very good, but very popular. $30 gets you 2 cocktails and a charcuterie board. The difference this time? They are hosting the event on The DeSoto’s pool deck. And yes, swimming is not only welcomed, but encouraged.

*Southbound Brewing Company’s Let’s Get Saucy Chicken Wing Sauce Competition. – July 14th, 7:00pmThis Saturday night event, now in its 2nd year is pretty popular and destined to become even more so. Contestants are encouraged to register their own home made chicken wing sauce. That sauce must be made using a Southbound Beer. You are invited to buy wings from Bowtie BBQ’s food truck and sample all of the sauces. Obviously, plenty of beer is available as well. The best part is, this party is free. Except, of course, for the the wings and beer you buy in order to sample sauces. If you dig wings and beer and licking your fingers on a sticky summer night, this has your name written all over it.

*Nick Mueller and Company’s Anthony Bourdain Tribute Dinner – July 14th, 7:00pm.If you absolutely must keep it indoors on a Summer Saturday night, then this dinner is for you. Chef Nick Mueller’s restaurant, The Laughing Boar is Guyton is his place a number of special dinners throughout the year. They don’t keep regular hours, only open when they can. Generally once per quarter. This summer his event will be a 9 course meal inspired by the life, food and recipes of Chef and Author Anthony Bourdain, who was found dead in a hotel room in France last month.  $25 from every seat sold will be donated to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  (912) 728-8150 for reservations and information.

*Shark Bar at Skull Creek Dockside, Hilton Head Island – The only entry that isn’t an event. Unless of course you consider the most spectacular sunsets in the area a nightly event. Shark Bar (pictured above) is a relatively new spot on the island, built to take full advantage of waterfront views and vibe. A huge (and I mean huge) bar offers plenty of TV’s, full food menu and an adjacent playground for the kids. This place was designed to make all ages happy and they totally deliver on that. AJ’s and Coco’s on Tybee both offer wonderful scenes at sunset, but if you want to break a routine and experience something really special, roll up on the Shark Bar about 6:30pm and enjoy your evening.
