Savannah’s Prohibition returns with new name and new look

Repeal 33, a new restaurant concept from the team behind the popular Prohibition, opens Thursday, August 13th, and reveals a bright, open, new vibe on MLK Boulevard.

The recent shutdown created an opportunity to reflect and re-imagine. The team decided the time was right to consider “what comes next” with their successful run with Prohibition. This creative thinking led them – quite literally – to the moment the nation’s liquor prohibition ended on December 5, 1933 with the repeal of the 18th Amendment and the ratification of the 21st Amendment.

“Repeal ushered in a new era. And the time just feels right for a dining and drinking experience that is fresh, bright, clean and forward-looking,” said Chef Greg Garrison, a partner in the restaurant group. “Our goal with Repeal 33 is to make guests feel completely uplifted and energized.”

The restaurant’s menu will highlight fresh, local seafood dishes, seasonal ingredients and some of their hits like crispy Brussels Sprouts, house-made charcuteries, and charred wings. A five-course chef’s tasting menu will allow guests to sit back and relax while the chef “steers” the evening.

Drinks will include a specialty cocktail menu featuring a sure-to-quench Lowcountry Swizzle (rum, peach, Blue Curaçao, lime Demerara and mint), a gin-based Earl Street Sour featuring elderflower, lemon, honey and egg white foam, and the Well Known Secret which is a concoction of vodka, Orgeat syrup, lime, cucumber, mint and bitters.

Some changes within the restaurant naturally lend themselves to current social distancing guidelines. The interior features numerous dedicated private dining spaces that welcome small groups while allowing appropriate spacing. Cozy snugs have been expanded to accommodate larger private groups. Dedicated event spaces are engineered to eliminate through-traffic.

Meanwhile, staff will follow all CDC guidelines for restaurant operations. Staff temperatures will be taken daily and staff will be tested regularly through a partnership with a concierge testing service. Repeal 33 will open Thursday through Monday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.; happy hour is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.; dinner is served from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Repeal 33 is located at 125 Martin Luther King Boulevard; call 912-200-9255 for more information.
