Savannah’s Historic Restaurants

Thanks to all that joined us for this episode of Eat It and Like It with Jesse Blanco.  We debated long and hard over which spaces to feature. So many historic spaces not only in Savannah, but around the South. We decided to break it up. We featured some history in Savannah this time. We will feature some history from across the South in the Spring. Meanwhile, this time around, here is a list of who we featured. In in the order in which they appeared.

El Coyote Savannah – El Coyote is a Mexican restaurant in an old ice plant, circa 1840’s. After that it was a glass plant. It sat empty for a long while before it was re-furbished and became an Italian restaurant called The Florence. El Coyote also is home to Savannah’s only ramen bar. Upstairs there is a raw bar created by the owners of Savannah’s very popular Wyld Dock Bar.

Belford’s Seafood and Steaks – Located in the heart of tourist central in downtown Savannah -City Market- Belford’s is often overlooked by locals. Once upon a time, it could have been considered a ‘turn and burn’ tourist trap, but that has changed over the years with a significant effort to offer the best quality food they can. The building originally housed the Savannah Hebrew Congregation’s offices. Later it became Belford’s grocery store. Photos of the space’s history line the walls.  A fascinating look into the past. Even if they did, once upon a time, kill chickens in the basement.  Hey, you had to do it somewhere, we suppose.

East End Provisions -Savannah. East End Provisions was originally just that, a provisions store in the late 1800’s. A rather large one at the corner of Price and Broughton Streets in Savannah. Later it became a dry cleaner, then a very popular French restaurant called Firehouse. Later it became one of Savannah’s most popular Mexican restaurants for nearly two decades it was Juarez Mexican Restaurant.  Once that closed it sat empty for 2 years before it was restored as East End. A fine neighborhood spot for lunch and dinner. Sandwiches, salads and more.
