Savannah Restaurant Bubble 2019

To hear a lot of people talk about it, doomsday is near.

We spent a lot of time talking to restaurant owners for this episode.  Some are cautiously optimistic with the growth we are seeing in Savannah. Others think we’ve reached a saturation point. Yet, some some of the successful owners continue to open additional restaurants.

We only featured two ‘restaurants’ in this episode and mentioned a couple more.  Here they are in the order they appeared:

Blends A Coffee Boutique – Blends is a different kind of coffee spot.  As we mentioned in the episode, it is bright, airy with lots of light and windows looking out on to Broughton Street.   The coffees are roasted every day in house. Owner Javier Carro believes that provides you with a fresher cup.  They do a nice job and most importantly, they are local.

Black Rabbit –  Black Rabbit is a tiny sandwich shop and full liquor bar in Savannah’s Victorian District. The epitome of a neighborhood bar. The sandwiches are made to order and delicious. Only a few on the menu.  Half sizes and full sizes. Plenty of parking on the street for a quick lunch too.

  1. the problem most restaurant owners I speak to is getting good servers and staff. if half the places in Savannah serve good food (and that is being generous), barely 20% offer good service. I am told this is because far too many servers are functioning alcoholics who only have the job because it pays cash for drinking afterwards. I am not trying to be funny, I wish this wasn’t so. but this is a known problem with many restaurant owners that isn’t discussed openly. all one needs to do is visit a few restaurants. service here is usually not very good or worse. people mail it in until closing and drinking time. this is one of the reasons The Florence and Sugo Rossa didn’t make it, to name just two. their food was hit and miss, but the service was just bad. other places somehow stay open despite sub-par to terrible service.
