Random Ruminations from the Region’s Food Scene
It is not my first choice to set traffic records on this website because of bad news, but alas here we are……
*The news last week that River Street’s Olympia Cafe would not be returning to the location they held for 30 years was the one of the worst kept secrets in town. Once the City of Savannah realized that they had no tenants to execute the lease they had given Olympia last year, it was time to move on. They did so in the form of a press release. You can read those details here.
*The news, of course, is not all bad. There will be a Greek restaurant opening down the street from the former Olympia location. We were first to report that last week. You can see that full story here.
*And if you really need a catch up refresher course on the entire saga that amounted to the ‘end of the line’ for Olympia Cafe, then you should give this podcast a listen. I explain it in as much detail as possible so that there is a firm understanding of what happened here. The city didn’t boot them out. That narrative is a tired bit. Give it a listen.
*That news was followed roughly 48 hours later by the news that Wang’s II, on Savannah’s Southside would be closing, ending a 34 year run on Waters Avenue. Read that one here.
That’s enough of that stuff, don’t you think?
*On the very bright side, I finally made it over to Marbled and Fin, Savannah’s brand new “Modern Steakhouse” downtown. The meal and the entire experience were simply exceptional. Food, service, decor. All home runs. The Caesar Salad, maybe the best I’ve ever had. My only ‘beef’ (pun intended) is the guest wearing a ball cap in this restaurant. Yes, it was at the bar, but c’mon man.
*The smash burger at Bootlegger on River Street-totally under the radar. Check it out. Cocktails as well.
*The chicken tenders at Over Yonder? They are not under any radars, but they probably play 2nd fiddle to the burgers there. Fair enough, but they should not be overlooked.
*The same goes for the food at Pooler’s El Mezcal Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar. My favorite in that area. If you’ve not been, it’s a must try.
*In the ‘food review’ department, you should know we’ve been doing a little more ‘traditional’ reviews of meals we’ve eaten and liked here and there. You’ll find those on the Eat It and Like It Podcast. Our first was a full review of dinner at the brand new Old Savannah Distillery on Montgomery Street Downtown. Find that here.
*We also put together a resource you should hang on to for future use…all the food within immediate walking distance of the Johnny Mercer Theater and Enmarket Arena. There are a lot of options. This list is a good one to have if you aren’t familiar with the area.
*There’s a new brewery in Savannah. Check it out here.
*FARM Hospitality Group (Common Thread, Flora and Fauna, Strangebird) are putting a pizzeria into Service Brewing Company downtown. Work has begun. Fingers crossed that it all goes smoothly but their first pie is still months away.
*Our Eat It and Like It Fried Chicken and Bubbles dinner is coming to Pooler on June 4th. Grab your seats here.
*Also, our Eat It and Like It Summer Dinner Series tickets are available. 2 dinner parties on Wilmington Island. Great price and BYOB. Check that out here.
*Year 2 of the Eat It and Like It Burger Bash is on the way. Bigger and Better than last year. Interested participants should contact us at tips@eatiandlikeit.com

*In the Lowcountry….we’ve got big plans for you guys. Content-wise. Can’t share too much more than that right now.
*BTW, we made a list of our favorite spots on Hilton Head Island for seafood. There is a lot. It’s not a dining guide. It’s our guide of what we like and why. Find it here.
*A couple of weeks ago, we put out a podcast explaining the “Tale of the Tape” on the differences on the food scene between Savannah and Hilton Head Island. Simply because I am asked all of the time. We compare seafood, steaks, Italian and more. If you like both, you should give it a listen here.
*Similarly, if you don’t know about All Joy Donut Company in Old Town Bluffton you should. Take a look below.
*You can find a lot of what we do these days on Youtube. Channel Eatitandlikeit1
*We create more content on the food scene in this region than anyone else. And 2nd place isn’t even close. We are very proud of that and appreciate you stopping by.
*Down in Florida…..If you are visiting St. Augustine this Summer, you must include a stop at Sunday Gathering Table. Look it up and thank us later.
*I also stopped in on a fairly new brewery in Jacksonville called Myrtle Avenue Brewing Company. It was great. I’ll be sharing more about that soon. Give ’em a look if you are head that way.
