Random Ruminations from the food scene: October 2023

When Savannah Tequila Company opened at the Plant Riverside District, I thought the food was great. Then they lost a chef and my next visit was just good. That was over a year ago. Since then, I’ve been back more than once and I can say it is excellent. A solid option (along with Graffito Pizza) when you are down that way with visitors to Savannah. Don’t sleep on it. The queso fundido (photo above) is exceptional.

Meanwhile, if you missed it last week, Big Bon Bodega has expanded their bagel sandwich offerings. There are 8 new sandwiches on the menu. I’ve had a couple, they are great and absolutely a full meal, wow.

Incidentally, also in that Big Bon story we shared is their plans to expand to Pooler. Check it out. Big Bon Pizza is also making a comeback in the next few weeks.

Speaking of Pooler…E Tang is Savannah’s best Chinese food. I enjoyed a fabulous meal at their Hilton Head Island location last week. Owner David Chen tells me he has signed a lease to open a 3rd spot in Pooler. In the old Steak and Shake building near Sam’s Club. Interesting choice. Very curious to see how that shakes out.

Also coming soon, as in a few weeks, is Georgia Comfort Kitchen. A ‘comfort food’ spot (obviously) in the old Sweet Tea space in Port Wentworth near Highway 21 and I-95. It is a collaboration between two long time Savannah residents. One of which is Pulkit Chawla, owner of the very very good Himalayan Curry Kitchen in Richmond Hill. I’ll have more with them next week.

Back downtown, Das Box, a neighborhood cocktail bar with small menu of Asian inspired eats is now open. Find them at 1006 East Broad. The corner of East Waldburg Street.

Anita Deli Sandwich is a great lunch spot hidden away on Jefferson Street in Savannah.

Chris Hathcock, former Executive Chef at Husk Savannah is in the middle of a 2-day a week residency at Strange Bird in Savannah’s Victorian District. The menu is changing every week, but it has been an instant hit. He’ll be there Tuesday and Wednesday nights through November 29th. Get there early or you are going to wait. Find more on Instagram here.

If you are on a road trip, you would have a very hard time doing better than the doughnuts they offer at Hole in Asheville, North Carolina. I had them last year sitting out in the cold in their parking lot and returned last weekend to not only watch them being made, but also enjoy them in their dining room. Top 2-3 doughnuts I’ve ever had.

I cannot leave Asheville without a plug for one of the coolest concepts I’ve seen in a while. Asheville Sports Club is equal parts pickleball courts, basketball court, beer garden and upscale sports bar all in one. Think Starland Yard meets the YMCA and Alley Cat Lounge. Televisions everywhere for game watching on the weekend. They don’t offer any food, but they have a table FULL of menus near the door where you can order from anywhere in the neighborhood and either walk over to pick up or get it delivered to enjoy at the ‘club.’ See what I’m talking about here.

Buffalo’s at Palmetto Bluff has undergone a beautiful renovation. The food is fabulous as well. No trouble saying one of my favorite casual-ish ‘off the beaten path’ spots in the area. Yes, it is open to the public.

Oh by the way, I wrote a book. It came out a few weeks ago. It’s called Savannah Food Crawls and is not only a must for any visitor you know that is headed this way, but I also think it is a great resource for locals that don’t make their way downtown all that often. We broke downtown Savannah into 15 or so ‘walk abouts’ with lists of where you should eat or drink and sprinkled in some history. You can buy a copy here or at Amazon.com

Speaking of said book, we’ll be boppin’ around the area for a series of signing events the next few weeks. The biggest of which will be at Burnt Church Distillery in Bluffton on October 26th. If you buy a book, they are going to buy you a cocktail that night. Sound like a deal? It is. See you there!

A quick thank you to everyone who attended our Supper Club event at Pacci Italian Kitchen last weekend. It was a great time. So great, we might just do it again next year.

Speaking of next year, be on the look out after November 1st for an announcement on our annual Fried Chicken and Champagne event. Coming Thursday, January 25th. Just FYI, this is our fastest selling event. Seats will likely be gone before Thanksgiving. So plan accordingly.

The Pumpkin Pie ice cream at the brand new Doki Doki in Savannah is one of the best versions of that flavor I’ve ever had. Fantastic. Same goes for the German Chocolate at Leopold’s. I had them both for lunch about 20 minutes apart the other day. Tough job, I know.

Some pizza guys in Savannah are collaborating for a day of pizza on October 28th. They are calling it Pizza Fest and will feature Hop Atomica, Big Bon Pizza, Pizzeria Vittoria and Savannah Pizza Club all in one spot. Yes from noon until 9pm with new pies dropping all day long. $40 will get you all the pizza you care to enjoy, again, for NINE hours. Find more about this and tickets here. This is a ticketed event.

If you missed my write up on the brand new Italian restaurant in Savannah, it is called Saint Bibiana and it’s a beautiful welcomed addition to our food scene. Check it out here.

Street Somm is a new television show on Tastemade network that made a visit to Savannah last Summer. The episode aired on October 2nd. It is a beautifully produced show with amazing visuals and great story telling. You can watch it here on youtube
