Random Ruminations from the Food Scene: March 2025

Running off at the keyboard while shaking off a 4 day St Patrick’s Day celebration in and around Downtown Savannah.

Sweet Patricia’s, a delightful neighborhood bakery on Habersham Street had an eventful week. Thursday they announced they’d be closing temporarily. There was an apparent issue with city of Savannah permitting. By lunch time Friday, the issue had been resolved. They will be back in the saddle Friday and re-open to the public Sunday March 23 at 9am.

Meanwhile, the other big story surrounding a ‘closing’ is at Dottie’s Savannah Market on Broughton Street. The popular eatery announced in early January that they were taking a break and would return in February. They have yet to return. We’ve reached out to them in hopes of finding out what their plans are. We will let you know what comes of that inquiry.

Eating and liking across town over the holiday weekend. We entertained a dozen (yes, 12) family members this year celebrating a birthday. There was a lot of cooking at home, but we did make it out for some great eats. They included: the always popular Spanky’s Beachside on Tybee Island, a big shout out to the staff their for handling multiple large groups at once. Not easy to do.

Same goes for the staff and crew at Brochu’s Family Tradition in the Starland neighborhood. It blows my mind how many people STILL don’t know about Brochu’s or where they are located or what they are about. I’ve called it one of Savannah’s best casual eateries more than once. They lived up to that billing with our group last weekend. Exceptional dinner.

Wexford Pub is obviously very popular in City Market. We were on a 3-4 hour wait last Sunday, but the quality of the food was perfect. So good.

The KFC chicken wings at Peregrin Rooftop are some of the most underrated in Savannah. For the record KFC is Korean Fried Chicken, not Kentucky.

Meanwhile, downstairs at Emporium Kitchen and Market, Martini Mondays are a solid after work choice.

There is movement on The Darling Oyster Bar to Savannah front. They told the AJC in Atlanta they’d be open first quarter of this year, that isn’t happening but the effort is crawling forward. Soon, y’all, soon.

Fleeting at the Thompson Hotel is hosting their next set of pop-up dinners. “Cuatro Amigos” on March 24/25 as well as March 31st and April 1st. In this edition of Fleeting’s chef-driven pop-up series, Chef Brian ‘Cuatro’ Gomez Martinez returns with Cuatro Amigos, bringing the bold flavors of central Mexico to the Southeast Coast. Using rich, seasonal ingredients, he crafts a one-of-a-kind dining experience that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation.

We have a brand new events calendar on this website. We are listing anything from Savannah to Hilton Head and Beaufort that is food centric. Find the list here and bookmark it. You’ll find a direct link in the middle of our homepage. We think it will be a tremendous resource for food-related fun going forward.

UKIYO in the Starland District has begun weekend lunch service. For now they are offering similar items from their dinner menu, but lunch specials will be on the way soon. They will now open at 12 Noon on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Starland Square is a new outdoor venture opening Saturday at 101 East 41st Street. They are hosting a Grand Opening celebration featuring a green space right in the middle of the neighborhood. They’ll offer (for sale of course) hemp beverages, mocktails, snacks and an alcohol-free bar/patio.

Several new food spots in and around Savannah to share: West Broad Bandshell is at 514 MLK, Junior Blvd. They are offering an ecclectic mix of Southern and Korean food. The photos actually look great. We have yet to try it. We’ll keep you posted. Meantime, you can find them on Instagram.

Faraces ‘finest pizza and pints’ is now open on Tybee Island. The menu features sandwiches, pies of course, apps and salads. 1605 Inlet Avenue on Tybee. You know the spot, right next to Chu’s that’s been a number of different things over the years.

Foxtail Coffee is new at 601 Indian Street across from Service Brewing and the US Post Office building just off of the Westside of the Historic District.

If you missed it last week, Bubba Garcia’s is a St Simons based eatery that has now opened on Bay Street near Bull Street. They feature Mexican bites, wings and more. They’ve done an excellent job renovating the space formerly occupied by Tondee’s Tavern.

The carrot cake at Buffalo’s in Palmetto Bluff rivals the best I’ve ever had. How popular is it? They go through 3 full cakes a day sometimes.
