Midtown’s Sugo Rossa Closes

It was supposed to be the answer to what everyone in Savannah was looking for. It was suppose to be a spot South of Derenne Avenue to have great Italian food. It was supposed to be somewhere Savannah could go for a great Italian dinner without having to travel all the way downtown. Well, it was for a little while, but now it is gone.

Eat It and Like It has learned that Sugo Rossa, the Italian eatery owned and operated by the same group behind the very popular Cotton and Rye, has closed its doors for good. The news confirmed by a former employee who asked not to be identified.

Sugo Rossa, located in the 12 Oaks Shopping Center in Midtown Savannah never really performed to expectations. The thought was there would be enough retail traffic in the area to support lunch service, but that was eliminated pretty quickly after they opened. The thought was there was enough demand for traditional “Americanized” versions of Italian food to support dinner service. But while it was a local’s favorite, it never fully caught on. Not like anyone had hoped at any rate.

The food wasn’t the problem. It was outstanding. The numbers required to exist in a major shopping center that carries a Publix Supermarket as an anchor,  the likely reason for shutting down.

The news comes just a few months after Fiore, another popular Italian eatery in the Sandfly neighborhood closed its doors. And one year after The Florence, another spin on Italian on Victory Drive closed as well.

Meanwhile, La Scala Ristorante, an Italian concept years in the planning,  is set to open its doors in a few weeks at Abercorn and 37th streets.

We have reached out to ownership at Sugo Rossa for comment and will update this story when we receive it.

  1. I am surprised there has been no update… We are really sorry to hear about Sugo Rossa closing. We love it as do all our friends. The food is delicious and everyone there is very friendly and professional. Just sad. They won the award for bet Pizza this year too.
