It is true. More than anything else, I get asked for places “off of the beaten path.” Everyone wants something different. Different. Different. Different. It was the inspiration for this episode. Of course, what I didn’t mention is the fact that if everyone goes off of the beaten path, then that eventually becomes the path, no? Of course it does. There are a ton of spots out there that are doing a great job “off of the beaten path” we only had time for three. Here they are, in the order that they appeared in our show.
Matthew Raiford has a nice following in the Golden Isles already. He’s actually developing a bit of a name for himself across the South. The Farmer and The Larder is a great spot downtown Brunswick. His farm is Gilliard Farm. It is located in Woodbine, Georgia, outside of Brunswick.
Chef David Young made a name for himself on Hilton Head Island, then disappeared. A number of people knew where he had gone, but it is taking him a little bit to get everyone that enjoyed his food at Roast Fish and Cornbread on the island that he is in Bluffton now under a different name. His inspirations are Gullah. That is his background. His family has been on Hilton Head Island for over 185 years. His food is fantastic. The sweet potato cornbread is the talk of the town. Seriously, it is that good.
They wanted to get beyond the steamers and fry baskets on the beach. After building the following at the very popular Sundae Cafe since 2003, AJ Baker and Mark Sturmfelz decided to do something different on Tybee Island. Pub food. Bar Food. Gastropub. Whatever you want to call it, they wanted something casual, yet different. 80e Gastropub, like Sundae Cafe is located in a gas station strip mall. It is outstanding. The Uptown Burger is the show stopper there. But all of the dishes are great. Try the Low Country Tacos. Shrimp, Chorizo, House Made Sausage and potatoes in taco shells.
See you on TV,
Jesse
