Clayton Rollison announces sale of Hilton Head Island’s Lucky Rooster

The rumors started last year with a shut down during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in April.

“Is Lucky Rooster going to return?”

If I was asked once, I was asked 100 times. The short answer at the time was ‘I have no idea.’

Well now we know the long answer and it is a very simply “Yes and No.”

Hilton Head Island native and chef Clayton Rollison made it official Tuesday with the announcement via social media that he had parted ways with the restaurant he created and made into one of the island’s best, Lucky Rooster Kitchen and Bar.

“When I was 20 I made up my mind what I wanted to do and set forth on a path that led to the creation of Lucky Rooster Kitchen and Bar with Leah Rollison.” He wrote on Facebook.

“David Leffew and his team are now the awesome new owners of Lucky.”

Lucky Rooster was widely regarded as the island’s most progressive menu. Rollison returned to Hilton Head Island to open a restaurant that offered modern twists on Low Country cuisine. His menus were different than the ‘Island food’ most residents and visitors alike expect when they visit a resort destination.

Clayton saw an opportunity to provide the kinds of dishes and flavors you would find around The South and offered them as an alternative to the classics that are so popular on Hilton Head Island. They were well executed, too.

The news comes not so much as a surprise, but as an official announcement of what had been suspected for quite some time. The space had been listed for sale for the better part of a year.

The good news is the name and the brand will apparently live on. From what we’ve been told, the name will stay the same. Some favorite dishes might stay on the menu. All of that is a work in progress, but what is certain is that Clayton Rollison will no longer be a part of Lucky Rooster Kitchen and Bar on Hilton Head Island. Though he is excited about what the Leffew team will be doing with the space.

“Lucky Rooster Kitchen and Bar changed a lot of views of what is possible on this little island and with that I look forward to seeing what David Leffew and his team does going forward.”

For his part, Clayton has plans he will share when the time is right. Or not. But in the short term, once the new Lucky Rooster opens later this year, you might just see him in there for dinner.

Lucky Rooster has announced they will be re-opening in April. Their new chef is Savannah veteran Chef David Landrigan. Read more about that part of the story here.
