Savannah has had a run on pizza the last month or so. If you didn’t know about them, you should.

Specials is now open in the lane right off of Bull Street and 41st Street. In the lane behind the buildings there. I have not tried it yet, but a number of people who’s opinions I value have told me it is nothing short of excellent. It is brought to you by the same folks behind Late Air across Victory Drive.

The other is Kyle Jacovino’s Pizzeria Vittoria inside of Starland Yard. For their first 5 years, they offered Neopolitan style pies. Over the Summer they shut down and flipped the operation to NY style pizza. They opened a couple of weeks ago also to great reviews. The Neopolitan pies have moved inside Kyle’s Lucia Pasta Bar on Bull Street-which by the way is fairly quietly one of this city’s best restaurants in my book.

So why haven’t I tried any of this pizza yet? We are planning an afternoon of pies with the camera crew in the next 2-3 weeks with a full report to follow.

Another new pizza/Italian joint on Habersham led to an interesting experience. Read about my visit to Romano’s Grill here. More importantly, listen to the podcast for a full explanation.

Meantime, work continues on yet another pizza spot, this one inside of Service Brewing on Indian Street downtown. It’s brought to you by the fine folks behind Common Thread, Strangebird and Flora and Fauna. It will be called Handsome Devil. They tell me they are hoping for a January opening.

Ran into Chef Roberto Leoci a few days back, he tells me his Italian restaurant project on Congress Street is progressing, albeit slower than anyone anticipated. It’s called Nicoangelo. You’ll find it at 309 West Congress Street near City Market. Follow them on Facebook here

Italian ain’t your thing, Oktoberfest wrapped up on the on the River, but the crazy popular Weiner Dog races haven’t happened yet. They were moved to Saturday morning, October 31st because of weather a couple of weeks back. So if you missed it, you didn’t miss it. Make plans to be there and get to the Plant Riverside District that Saturday 11am.

BTW, Also coming soon is Maizal, Savannah’s new Gluten Free Columbian cafe. They are opening on Habersham near 37th very soon. Ribbon cutting, I’m told, is scheduled for November 5th. More on that next week.

Pritchard and Co-Broughton Street’s best casual eats-have added some new breakfast items and a couple for dinner. They plan to open for dinner service soon. (photo above)

By the way, three Savannah brunches you should know about if you don’t already: Husk Savannah (pictured Cheerwine Pancake), Veratina in the Victorian District and Tortguas Island Grille in Thunderbolt. Thank us later. Full review of my visit to Husk is on the podcast here.

If you missed it a few days back, we told you about Oak Steakhouse coming to downtown. Read more here.

Leopold’s Ice Cream is now open in Savannah’s Starland District. Their 3rd location in town, to go along with 2 at the Savannah/Hilton Head International airport. Their Starland spot has some city and is a cashless operation, FYI.

We’ve begun Season 17 (can you believe it) of our television show. Eat It and Like It with Jesse Blanco is a look at the food scenes on both sides of the Savannah River. Sometimes we even head down to Florida. Find it Sundays 12:30pm or Saturdays 5am on WJCL-TV.
