Vilano Beach, Florida: A Hidden Slice of Americana

It is not at all uncommon for visitors to St Augustine, Florida to want to visit the beach. There are two main beaches nearest to Old Town St. Augustine, both are very different, with Vilano Beach and it’s “Retro Main Drag” that should attract the crowds looking for something that while still family friendly, offers a much more quiet approach to a vacation on the coast.

A walk down Vilano Road is like a walk back in time, featuring retro Mid Century Modern Architecture and signage that make it look like this tiny beach town has been in a time capsule for the last 50 plus years.

Keeping in mind that Old Town St. Augustine is a roughly ten minute drive away, there is a great variety of options for eats without leaving Vilano Beach that make it attractive to anyone looking for that beach getaway. Here are a few of our picks and we will start with the ‘most prestigious’

Michael’s St. Augustine

Regulars to St. Augustine probably know about Michael’s in Old Town. Yes, same Michael’s. It has moved out to the beach. Michael’s is now a contemporary steak and seafood restaurant in Vilano Beach. Led by acclaimed chef, Michael Lugo, their ingredient-driven menu blends modern techniques with the finest local and regional ingredients. Enjoy an award-winning wine list, a curated selection of premium spirits, and expertly crafted cocktails in a setting that redefines the classic steakhouse experience. It isn’t inexpensive, but the best things in life rarely are. Located inside the Hyatt Place Hotel on Vilano Road.

Pesca Rooftop Kitchen and Bar

On the rooftop of that same Hyatt Place Hotel is Pesca Rooftop Kitchen and Bar. Pesca is a casual Florida coastal kitchen and bar offering spectacular views of Vilano, St. Augustine, and beyond. The concept is inspired by the Latin and Caribbean flavors that the Chef Michael Lugo seeks out when traveling south to his native Puerto Rico. Yes, same Michael as the steakhouse downstairs. Don’t let that deter you, the eats are as outstanding as the views.

Caps on the Water

Caps is probably Vilano’s most popular waterfront restaurant. Located on the Intracoastal Waterway side of town, Caps offers fresh Florida Seafood classics like Crab Cakes and their Catch of the Day offered in a series of preparations. They have an ambitious cocktail program and a decent sized wine list featuring bottles from all over the world. Oregon Pinots to European Reislings and anything in between. Caps does not accept reservations. But you can get on their wait list before heading that way by visiting their website.

The Reef Restaurant

The Reef is Vilano’s only beachfront restaurant. One of few remaining true Oceanfront restaurants in Northeast Florida, The Reef, reopened in 2002. commands the most spectacular views. Sit at any table inside and the view is dynamic to say the least, or enjoy the recently rebuilt and expanded deck where you not only look out at The Atlantic Ocean, you listen to it too as the waves break.. Chef Denzel Aponte, delivers a menu primarily of fish and seafood balanced with beef, poultry, pasta and creative specials always fresh and sourced locally when possible.

Aunt Kates

On the casual side of things is Aunt Kates. Continuing over 100 years of serving the finest in local seafood, Aunt Kate’s pleasures both the eye and the palate. Situated in a grove of live oaks on the bank of the Tolomoto River, you can dine on the outside decks under the trees or inside in either the main dining room or the Victory bar. The trees, scarred by fire, still lean over the water, framing the ever-changing sunset. Steamed oysters, peel ‘n eat shrimp, fresh salad, great soups, steaks or blackened chicken. There is something for everyone with an eclectic vibe perfect for someone looking some seafood in a laid back atmosphere.
