Thunderbolt’s Finches Sandwiches Set to Close
One of Savannah’s favorite ‘off the beaten path’ sandwich shops has announced they’ve reached the end of the road.
Finches Sandwiches and Sundries is losing their lease and will be forced to close. The annoucement was made via social media on Friday morning.
The building, originally built as a gas station, was converted into a sandwich shop and Air BnB over 5 years ago. In that time, Finches, led by business partners Rebecca Gawley and Jamie Pleta, turn the otherwise quiet neighborhood corner into a destination for the entire city. The “Air BnB” was eventually converted into indoor seating, last year they added a bar to the space. It has long been a locals favorite.

The building is apparently for sale. Friday’s announcement included the fact that there had been an attempt to buy the building outright in order to keep the space, but its former status as a gas station made the location unattractive to any lenders. Environmental issues and clean up posed to much of a risk.

The ladies implied that they are in search of another space, but that is usually easier said than done. Finches was a locals favorite, for sure. Let’s hope we see them again.
Meantime, there is no ‘last call’ announcement as of yet. They said they will be there as long as they can. So stop by and visit with them while you are still able to.
