While we like to think we keep pretty good tabs on everything going on across the area’s food scene, I’m not at all afraid to admit when there is some great food out there we didn’t know about.
The text came in a few weeks ago from one of our secret agents (we have a few).
“Made it here? Real deal stuff.”
“I’ll be the judge of that.” Was my response. “Well, I was here with a Mexican. Not sure a Cuban can override.”
Touché.
It took me a couple of weeks, but I took the ride out Ogeechee Road to Los Compas. A very simple, no frills authentic taqueria behind the Sonic near Chatham Parkway.
My first clue-and it is usually the case at the best places-no one in there was speaking English. Not the staff, not the customers. Servers will generally help you along if you are challenged in that department, but it most definitely helps if you arrive carrying a semblance of Español in your pocket.
The menu, while someone abbreviated, read like a lot of the menus you will find at the spots where grandma probably made the tortillas. They were heavy on breakfast, undoubtedly attempting to cater to the number of blue collar workers that traffic in that part of town.
I kept it simple as I usually do on my first visit anywhere. 2 tacos ($3.50 each) and a Quesadilla de Carne Asada. The latter served with rice, black beans and a salad.
The black beans-very simply-were the best I’ve had in Savannah. Absolutely outstanding and worth a return trip themselves. Salsas, clearly house made were served in easy pour jars, which I liked because it kept the mess to a minimum.
The rest of it was very good. The quesadilla plate was a huge portion for $13.00 I struggled to finish it all.
Behind the counter at the grill, two young men stood with piles of meats in front of them making these tacos and/or toss other meats on the grill. This stuff was fresh, it was delicious.
My friend suggested that these would be Savannah’s best tacos. I’m not sure I’m ready to go there. There are some I’ve enjoyed here and there, but the best I’ve had in the area are over the bridge in South Carolina.
In the short term, you can visit Taqueria Los Compas for a quick and delicious meal. They are open 7 days a week until 9pm.
