Savannah’s Elite BBQ Sandwich
This is a do not pass go, do not collect $200 all hands on deck, get down there and try this sandwich alert.
Have I gotten your attention yet?
OK, good.
The background is fairly simple. We stumbled upon this sandwich by accident. We were out shooting a BBQ Roundup segment across Savannah last month. There were 4 stops in all. The last one being District Smokehouse down at Plant Riverside District waterfront area. I had enjoyed their BBQ very much in the past and wanted to check in on them and see what they were up to.
Shortly after I ordered a standard BBQ platter, Chef Chris rolled up on us to say hello. He didn’t know we were coming. He only stopped by because he saw us sitting there with a video camera. Once I told him why we were there, he said “I’ve got something for you to try” and disappeared.
I had no idea where he went or why.
He returned armed with a sandwich. OK, cool, I thought. I’ll get to try the BBQ sandwich. This, however, was not just any BBQ sandwich.
He called it the brisket cheesesteak, but I have since come to learn that its proper name is the Chatham Cheesesteak and it is the best BBQ sandwich I’ve had in many years. By far the best I’ve had in Savannah.
It was a essentially a Philly Cheesesteak-ish, but made with their house-made brisket. The brisket makes the sandwich. The brisket is exceptional. How good? I don’t play the ranking game around here much, but I will just because BBQ aficionados like to compare. My book? SlowFire BBQ’s Brisket is #1 in Savannah. District Smokehouse’s Brisket is 1a. A very close #2 is Sandfly BBQ. You can see the results of my BBQ round up in the video link at the bottom of this post. The video with the sandwich is right here:
You know the true measure of how good I think something is by how quickly I go back to enjoy it again, or bring someone with me to do the same. 3 days after that BBQ Roundup shoot, I was back down there to shoot the video you see above. 2 weeks after that, I was down on the river with friends in tow demanding that they try one as well. No, I was not hallucinating. Everyone in my group agreed, this Brisket Philly is just a great great sandwich. So much so, two of the people in the group went back the next day to have one again.
How often do you see me jumping up and down insisting that you try something so good? Not very often, we can agree on that. But I am now.
Yes, it’s that good. Yes, you need to try it. Do it during the holidays and enjoy the Christmas Marketplace down there, or wait until New Years Day. Either way….try the Chatham Cheesteak at Plant Riverside District. You will Eat It and Like It.
Meanwhile, check out the results of our BBQ roundup here:
