Random Ruminations: July 2025
Running off at the keyboard while trying to stay indoors as much as possible.
*If you haven’t heard yet, we are very excited to share that we’ve created the Savannah area’s first “Celebration of the Burger.” It’s called The Eat It and Like It Burger Bash and will run August 18th through the 28th. It will feature restaurants across the region, from Savannah to Bluffton and Hilton Head Island, all the way up to Beaufort, South Carolina. There some fantastic burgers in this region. This will be your chance to enjoy some of them.
*You can see a full list of participants (there are more than 30) now by clicking here.
*Municipal Grand is now open….early returns on food are good-and properly priced. Planning to get there in the next week or two.
*Both Common on Broughton and 1540 Room were recipients of Wine Spectator Awards this year. Read more about it here.
*Fans of Troupial Coffee shop will be happy to know that Majo has returned with a space on 70th Street in Savannah’s Midtown area between the hospitals. 817 East 70th to be exact. They opened this week, and are under ‘soft open’ hours from 7am until 11am only. That will change going forward.
*One of Savannah’s favorite locals sports bars, Coach’s Corner, is expanding. Build out is underway on Savannah’s Southside in the space formerly occupied by Tailgate Sports Bar and Grill. Tailgate closed back in February with plans to move to a new location, but that hasn’t panned out as of yet.
*There’s a new brunch at Electric Moon Rooftop at the Plant Riverside District. It’s called Amp’d. Features excellent bites, a DJ and, of course, exceptional views. It’s a nice vibe up there if you are looking for something different to enjoy on a Sunday.
*Of course, there is mucho in the ‘coming soon’ department…
*The two big projects are in the Starland District. Lucia and Fish Bar. Progress continues, we will see them both very soon.
*Another on the way in Starland is called Garden Square. It will be an indoor/outdoor ‘Garden inspired’ concept featuring elevated light bites and, of course, a sophisticated cocktail program. The entire footprint is about 6,000 square feet, which isn’t tiny. It will share a front courtyard with Brochu’s Family Tradition in the Starland District. If you thought parking around there was an issue now?……

*Sixby, a tiny but mighty bakery and sandwich shop in Thomas Square now has indoor seating(photo above). If you know you know. If you don’t, you should. Some of the best lunchtime eats in town. Go see them.
*We told you a couple of years ago that a steakhouse was going to be built at the new Eastern Wharf project. It’s called Bowdie’s Chophouse, a smallish steakhouse chain out of Michigan. There is a very popular location on Hilton Head Island and, yes, there will be one in Savannah. The full story behind the delay is a story unto itself. We’ll share it when we are able. All of that to say, I’m afraid it will be the Spring before Bowdie’s opens at Eastern Wharf. Maybe sooner if we get lucky.
*Yes, The Darling Oyster Bar will be opening. I’d bet $100 it is this year. As in 2025. That means soon, yes?
*Savannah Tequila Festival is coming to Victory North on Saturday, August 2nd. 50 unique and craft tequilas will be available for tasting. Tickets start at $52 for General Admission and include a fixed amount of pours and samples. Find more information and tickets here.
*Happy Anniversary to two fixtures on the Savannah food and drink scene. Locals favorite Cotton and Rye celebrates 10 years this summer. Service Brewing Company will blow out 5 candles this weekend. We’ve come a long way guys and gals. Congratulations to all of them.
*The building at 37th and Abercorn formerly occupied by La Scala Italian Restaurant has sold. There are plenty of rumors flying around as to who bought it and what will become of the space, but we’ve currently not confirmed any of it. So…we cannot share it. Will it become a steakhouse? We are chasing that story and will keep you posted.
*I shared some of my favorite casual eats in St Augustine last week. Here it is if you are headed that way and maybe missed it.
*New food-centric high end weekend event coming to Daufuskie Island in the Fall. It’s called Bateau and it’s happening at Haig Point October 23-26, 2025. Find more now here.
*In the Lowcountry, I got my hands on some Firemost Pizza last week. Great Tavern style pies. Cracker crunchy crust and delicious. It’s a food truck you will find most days at Broad Creek Marina. Look em up on Instagram.
*In the Lowcountry, Origin Coffee Bar-one of Savannah’s most popular-is on final approach to open on Main Street in Hilton Head Island. In fact, their soft open will be on August 1st. Stop by and say hello.
*We are hosting a Fried Chicken and Champagne Dinner on Hilton Head Island in September. The 24th to be exact. All you can eat Fried Chicken and all the bubbles you care to drink as well. Find a link to tickets right here.
*Speaking of Fried Chicken on Hilton Head Island, we had a chat about the scene on the island. If you missed it and are curious, you can find it here.
