If you’re looking for THE Savannah dive bar, look no further than Pinkie Masters (or just Pinkie’s to longtime fans).
Pinkie’s (named for original owner Luis Christopher Masterpolis—more widely known as Pinkie) has been pouring PBRs since 1951.
Stepping into Pinkie’s is like stepping back in time. It’s a spot where you can enjoy a $3 beer, yes. But it is also the spot where late on a weekend night, you will find people wearing anything from shorts to evening gowns and tuxedos winding up a great night. Everyone goes to Pinkie’s. And for good reason.
Perhaps Pinkie’s biggest claim to fame? Besides being named ‘Best Dive Bar’ in any number of publications? Is what happened in 1978 and the story involving then President Jimmy Carter.
Back in the day, Pinkie was big into politics and a huge supporter of Peanut Farmer Jimmy Carter’s political aspirations. The story you commonly hear is that Mr. Carter announced his plans to run for president by standing on top of the bar at Pinkies. This is, however, not true.
The real version of the story was President Carter-on a visit to Savannah in 1978-decided to slip out a side door of the DeSoto Hotel and walk (along with his secret service detail) the 30 yards to Pinkies.
Once he got there, he did stand up on the bar. There is a star to mark the spot on it. He did have a beer. But his only announcement was one of thanks to Pinkie for his support over the years in helping him become President.
How do we know? Once upon a time, we sat in a group with President Carter and listened to him share the story. But hey, who are we to allow facts to get in the way of a great story.
Closest Eats: Leon’s Sandwich Shop is literally 2 doors down. Hitch (From the Treylor Park Family) is a 40 second walk up on the next corner. Savoy Society is also around the corner with some fabulous eats as well.
