Paula Deen’s Creek House is sold: to Auspicious Baking Company

Raise your hand if you had this one on your bingo card. If you did, we may need to bring you in for a polygraph.

The building that was the former home of Paula Deen’s Creek House on Whitemarsh Island has finally sold. It’s new owners, Savannah’s first couple of baking, Katie Bryant and Mark Ekstrom, owners of Auspicious Baking Company. Yeah, wow.

The announcement was made midday Tuesday via social media. “We bought a restaurant, y’all…a big one” Quite clever, indeed.

The announcement continues with an explanation that Auspicious had been in desperate need of more space for quite some time. Nothing really worked out. They even considered a space outside of Savannah but wouldn’t dare leave.

Meanwhile, whispers had begun to circle the city that they were looking. Which was odd because they never made any secret of the fact that they were looking, but the rumor mill had them leaving Sandfly, which they have been adamant about not being true. There was never a plan to leave their Sandfly property and they reiterated that on Tuesday. The new property will be it’s own stand-alone restaurant in the building formerly occupied by Paula’s Creek House.

What kind of restaurant and what can we expect? They haven’t shared that yet, but they plan to begin renovations immediately. Permits to do so are already in hand.

Meanwhile, this news closes a chapter on the Deen family’s Creek House restaurant. It opened in 2004 as Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House, named for Paula’s brother. In 2017 it became Paula’s Creek House. It closed for good in January of 2023.

  1. That’s an ideal spot for a really good seafood restaurant…featuring their Auspicious Bakery goodies. Sounds weird, but it really could work! It’s such a wonderful spot, with a spectacular view. The new owners are so talented, they can surely make a go of it there…Savannah’s always needed a casual seafood restaurant!
