Random Ruminations from the food scene – March 2024

I have to begin by taking a quick look back at an historic St Patrick’s Day weekend in Savannah. Did the parade feel longer? yes it did. Did the crowds feel larger? Yes, they did. But through all of that, the amount of great service from the F&B community we encountered all over town was fantastic. A huge shout out to all who worked ALLLLLL of the long, hard hours making it work. It’s not easy. But everywhere we went, service was impeccable. Cheers!

If you missed the announcement on Monday, The Darling Oyster Bar will be holding a pop up at The Thompson Hotel over the few weeks. Monday/Tuesday only. Find more details here.

Starland Yard now has some new eats in the form of brick and mortar take out windows. Nixtate is a Mexican street food concept. Uncle June’s sandwiches and salads. They are opening every day and a welcomed addition to the only permanent eats at the yard-Pizzeria Vittoria. The food trucks will still roll through the yard. These new eateries are aimed at bringing more people overall to Starland Yard. Particularly during weekend lunch time hours.

Float: New coffee shop at Two Tides is now open 4 days a week in Starland. Lots of ‘day time’ activity coming to that area has been predominantly been a evening/night type of neighborhood. That’s good to see.

Meanwhile, If you love burgers and you have not had it yet, the burger at Brochu’s Family Tradition needs your attention asap.

The lamb tacos on the new menu at Peregrin (Perry Lane Hotel) are downtown Savannah’s best tacos. No question.

There was a very pleasant surprise out on Tybee Island a couple of weeks ago. I stopped in on Back River Brewery for some beer and basketball and got a bonus. The kitchen there is turning out some solid eats. I was given a bowl of smoked tomato bisque along with a smoked chicken salad sandwich on a great buttery croissant. I loved it. (Photo of it is above). This was not frozen, processed food coming out of a jar somewhere. This was obviously made from scratch and simply delicious. The guy behind the bar called it the ‘2nd best food on the island after Sundae Cafe.’ I don’t know if I’d go quite that far, but I hope you are getting the point. These were great eats.

Same weekend on Tybee I FINALLY got to try some of the incredibly popular Tybee Salt Bomb oysters. They were some of the best I’ve ever had. If you find some, try some. They are fantastic.

If you missed our story a few weeks back, Jen’s and Friends-a popular martini bar in Savannah will be closing this weekend. Read more here.

If you need to get out of town, Hilton Head Island’s 27th annual Wing Fest is this weekend. Saturday afternoon 11am-5pm. Family friendly and a ton of fun. It is the best wing event in the region. Find more here.

There’s a Cuban sandwich in Port Royal, South Carolina that is getting a lot of attention. They only make them once per month. They are inside of a bait shop. They are wonderful. Read more about it here.

If you REALLY need to get out of town, early bird tickets are still available until March 31st for the St Augustine Food and Wine Festival. It runs May 8th through the 12th. It is a great event. I know a lot of people who make the 2.5 hour drive to Florida’s Historic Coast for this one. Find events and tickets here.

Good eats on a short road trip: Hootenany’s BBQ is the same as the very popular South of Heaven that we have talked about many many times. Also in the Golden Isles on the fine dining side, we are hearing great things from Woodside, brought to you by Chef/Owner David Carrier.

Goody’s, the breakfast and lunch concept brought to you by our friends at Bull Street Taco appear to be on final approach. Signage is up, things inside are coming together. It shouldn’t be long before we have another breakfast spot South of Forsyth Park on Bull Street.

Savannah Tequila Company’s next tequila pairing dinner is Thursday, March 21st. These dinners are reasonably priced and fantastic food. Read more here.

Finally, a very quick thank you to Stratton and Mary Leopold for the invitation to join them in Nashville last week for the World Premiere of Stratton’s new movie, The Neon Highway. It felt like half of Savannah was there in support of Stratton’s latest venture. So great to see.
