It would be easy to think that, because of the rise in popularity of farmer’s markets, that they are big business. Yes, they provide a fabulous service to those who are genuinely interested in healthy eating initiatives. Yes, they provide a very valuable service to area farmers who are looking to make a little extra money selling directly to consumers. But, no, they aren’t huge money makers.
“Vendor fees do not cover the costs of operating the Farmer’s Market. Not even close.” Says Jeb Bush, Executive Director of Forsyth Farmer’s Market. “Fundraisers are easily 25% of our operating budget.”
The largest of those fundraisers is coming Sunday, April 29th. The Forsyth Farmer’s Markets Annual Family Picnic will be held Sunday at 4pm. It’s the one day a year where friends of the market slow down long enough to toss a blanket out on the ground, enjoy the live music and catch up on another year gone by.
Bush tells us the fundraising goal for this year is $15,000, up from just under $14,000 they raised last year.
The money raised not only goes toward operating expenses, but it also is critical in the markets ability to keep the grants they currently receive that off-set those expenses. “We are required to match 40% of the money we receive from Wholsome Wave of Georgia” Bush says. “That is a requirement in order for us get the help we receive from them.”
The line up of food is as impressive of a list as you will find at any event in the area. B’s Cracklin BBQ will be on hand with a whole hog, sides will be provided by Bull Street Taco, Brighter Day, Green Truck Pub, El Coyote and many many more. Beverages provided by Service Brewing and PERC Coffee.
“It’s a super laid-back, casual family fun event.” Bush says. “With great food” Tickets are $40, which include all food and drink. Children ages 7-16 are $15. Children under 7 are free.
