Thanks so much for taking the time to join us on Eat It and Like It for our look at some of the great chicken wings around Savannah/Hilton Head Island. As we mentioned on television, we aren’t talking about hot wings. Buffalo Hot Wings. We know better than to ‘go there.’ Reason why? If we mentioned our 5 favorites, someone will ask us about numbers 6,7 and 8.
No, this time around we visited wings made differently. Different flavors, different styles, different approaches than your run of the mill ‘ball game’ wings. We’ve got some good ones. Here they are in the order that they appeared on our show.
*One Hot Mama’s – Hilton Head Island. Amazing. Fantastic. I don’t know how else to describe them. The cooking technique certainly helps in that regard. Smoked, grilled or fried, but the fall of the bone goodness is tough to pass on. As are Orchid Paulmeier’s sauces. A couple of dozen total. They are all house made and declicious. The best wings on Hilton Head Island by a long shot.
*Prohibition Savannah -Prohibition is doing a lot of things well. And I will confess, the first time I had these wings, I liked them very much. The last time I had them? I absolutely fell in love with them. Memphis Dry Rub and Sweet Vinegar. Grilled. Gorgonzola Ranch and a carrot-chili emulsion. They might be the best thing you can eat at happy hour in Savannah. Of course, they are part of the regular menu as well.
*Greek Wings – Crystal Beer Parlor – Savannah. The Crystal Beer Parlor does a lot of things well. A lot of things incredibly well. Including their Greek Wings. Marinated overnight in their special Greek Dressing, Grilled THEN fried to order. Tough to beat. The flavors are excellent. Soon you will be able to get take some of that Greek dressing home with you. Crystal Beer Parlor is opening a retail shop near their entrance. A tiny shop. T shirts, small gifts, etc. Part of what they will be selling will be tiny dry mix bags of their greek seasoning. All you have to do is take one home and add high quality olive oil and you have their dressing. Look for that retail shop to open later in October.
*Cotton and Rye – The spicy honey wings at Cotton and Rye have been a ‘thing’ for a couple of years now and they are absolutely worth a mention here. First created for a Southern Wing Showdown in Atlanta, the wings became so popular that they went from a special on the menu to a permanent fixture. If you’ve not had them yet, you don’t know what you are missing.
