Best New Restaurant – 1540 Room

While there could be endless debate over what being the ‘Best’ is, this is a topic where we felt pretty strongly about who was being considered and who would win. And no, there were no doughnut shops involved.  The criteria was simple, the restaurant had to open during calendar year 2017. Truthfully, when we all thought Husk would open in the Fall, we thought we’d have a major debate on our hands. Ultimately, Husk missed the cut by days and the choice became a little easier.

When Kyle Jacovino decided to stay in Savannah following the closing of The Florence in June of last year, it was a small victory for Savannah’s food scene. Kyle landed squarely on his feet at The DeSoto Savannah Hotel calling his own shots, running his own shop. The result has been a huge plus for great food in the area. There are still too many people who can’t avoid the stigma of going into a hotel to eat, but trust us when we tell you the offerings at 1540 Room are very much worth the trip. The room is beautiful, the wine list is short but effective and the staff is something very different that what a lot of people say they experienced at The Florence. Some want to say that 1540 is that restaurant re-incarnated. I don’t see it that way, but understand that the style is similar because the chef is the same. If you haven’t visited 1540 yet, you very much should.. The pastry chefs are some of the best in the city, hands down. The attention to detail is outstanding as well.

A well deserved award for a chef and staff quietly doing great things tucked away in the city center.
