Savannah’s Olympia Cafe is No More: The Rest of the Story
Olympia Cafe has been part of Savannah’s River Street story for roughly 30 years, but this week brought confirmation that the beloved Greek restaurant will not return to its longtime home in the Thomas Gamble Building behind City Hall.
Why did Savannah lose its collective mind over this news? Not everyone understands the dynamic. We take a shot at explaining it all and making sense of what’s next.
In this unscheduled episode of the Eat It and Like It Podcast, Jesse walks through the history, the public outcry over Olympia’s lease, the City of Savannah’s renovation plans, and the reason the restaurant ultimately will not reopen in that original space. He also explains what appears to be next: longtime Olympia figure Vasilis Barlagas moving forward with a new Greek/Mediterranean restaurant farther east on River Street. Photo above: the new restaurant at 414 East River Street. It will be called Limani, a Greek word meaning Harbor. It is scheduled to open this Summer. Perhaps as early as June.
