Random Ruminations from the Food Scene January 2026
Running off at the keyboard thankful that the threat of icy weather is very unlikely to interfere with Restaurant Week this year. Hard to forget last year’s nightmare.
*Which means this is the perfect place to start this time out. Eat It and Like It’s Restaurant Week in Savannah begins on Wednesday, January 28th and runs through Super Bowl Sunday February 8th. We’ve got a great bit of variety. Pubs, fine dining and exceptional ethnic eats. Literally something for everyone. See the full lineup here.
*Also should mention that Chamber Restaurant Week on Hilton Head Island and Bluffton begins on January 31st. You can see their lineup here.
*Before we get to next week, a reminder to come out and join us this weekend (January 23-25) for the Eat It and Like It Cooking Stage at the Savannah Convention Center. We’ll be there all weekend cooking, sampling and talking shop. Admission is free all weekend long. Find the Cooking Stage line up here.
*Two other events we need to share with you. Our Fancy Fish Fry at Tubby’s Tank House will be Sunday, March1st at 1pm. 4 area chefs will be offering you endless samples of their fried bites. Participants include StrangeBird, from the Common Thread/FARM Bluffton family as well as Pritchard and Company, the new incarnation of Starland Cafe. Find more here.
*The last event on our agenda is our annual Fried Chicken and Bubbles Dinner, being held this year at Lavender Rooftop and Restaurant along the river. One price ($67) gets you all the chicken and sides you want plus all the bubbles you wish to consume. We announced that event about 10 days ago and we have (as of Wednesday) about 15 tickets left. It will sell out. If history is any judge, all seats will be gone by the end of this weekend. Find a link to more info and tickets here.
*Ok, let’s move on to some great eats.
*I had dinner a few weeks back at Coastal Capri Ristorante on Hilton Head Island. I walked away believing it was the best overall Italian food experience I’ve ever had in this region. Simply exceptional. (photo above). Service, atmosphere and of course, the food. They’ve only been around less than 2 years. But it is a must try for any Italian food lover in the Lowcountry-and I know there are plenty of you. Worth a drive from Savannah? If you are looking to get out of town? Absolutely.
*The ceviche I had at Mint to Be Mojitos last night was some of the best I’ve had in Savannah. That’s saying something. It is part of their restaurant week menu and it was outstanding. see that menu here.
*As were the Shrimp and Grits at 22 Square in the Andaz Hotel. (Photo below) also part of their Restaurant Week menu. Take a look here. Some of the best I’ve had in a while. Outstanding.

*The ladies at Finches Sandwiches and Sundries in Thunderbolt are getting into the tour business. They’ll be running tours into Bonaventure Cemetery this year. Includes a free cocktail. More on that next week.
*Crab Cake lovers should know that Tortugas Island Grille in Thunderbolt makes theirs as soon as they can get their hands on some fresh crab meat. If you are from Maryland, you are in luck. So are they. Closest thing you will get to a classic Maryland Crab Cake in the area is on River Road in Thunderbolt. Check em out.
*My go-to at Carey Hilliards is the Pulled Pork Club Sandwich. Photo below. So so good.

*My go to at Pomodori (Bluffton or Hilton Head) is the Chicken Picatta. If you know, you know. So unbelieveably good, I’m almost licking the plate every time.
*Have you checked out Hail Mary, the new sports bar adjacent to Bluffton’s Burnt Church Distillery? Great spot for a game. Eats I’ve had I enjoyed, but chef told me their menu was getting tweaked. Either way, a great spot to take in a big game now that College Basketball season is getting into full swing.
*In Port Royal, Sea Sea’s Honey Hole (home of the best Cuban sandwich in the county) is doing Cuban food during the slow winter. I haven’t tried it yet, but if her sandwiches are any indication, you need to check it out. Find her on Facebook and Instagram.
*Traffic to our podcast tripled in 2025. Thanks to all for that. Episodes from both sides of the Savannah River drop weekly. Find us here on this website or Apple Pods and Spotify.
*From the ‘coming soon’ department:
*We told you last month the group behind Bull Street’s Late Air was opening a restaurant just down the street on Bull Street in Starland. It will be a pizza spot. More on that soon.
*Meanwhile, their neighbor 520 Wings has announced plans for expansion into the former gas station next door at 2710 Bull Street. Work has begun. A fabulous addition to that area.
*Mint to be Mojitos Kitchen has begun build out of a 70 seat restaurant at the Eastern Wharf project long the Savannah River. Fingers are crossed for a Summer opening.
*We got a first look at renderings for Savannah’s newest rooftop venue, The Waving Girl (photo below). It will sit atop a new Hilton property on Bryan Street near Reynolds Square and adjacent to Abe’s on Lincoln. That will open later this year.
