Southern Soul BBQ Makes Room for More

If you love BBQ and live in Coastal Georgia or South Carolina, you have undoubtedly heard of Southern Soul BBQ. If you have heard about them and love BBQ but haven’t made the trip down to St. Simon’s Island, shame on you. It is absolutely as good as they say. I think they’ve been on every television show out there except The Brady Bunch. With good reason. Well, now, the guys at Southern Soul are going to make it a tiny bit easier for you to get your hands on some of their magical creations.

Not only have Griffin Bufkin and Harrison Sapp, co-founders of Southern Soul BBQ, decided to get into the food truck game in this area, but they are also just about done with a build out of a small building adjacent to their property on St. Simons Island. Right next door. It is essentially and expansion of their kitchen. Some space up front will serve as a special events space.

“All of our smokers will not be inside of this building” Southern Soul Chef John Helfrich told me during a recent walk through. I guess that means no more smokers in the parking lot.

The space is primarily going to be used for prep for all of their BBQ meat products. Smokers will be running a little longer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will be making that much more daily. If you know BBQ its best to sell all of your smoked meats the day they are made. “We can always do something with leftovers” chef says “but ideally we will sell everything we make”

The expanded space, instead will allow them to be better equipped for special events and catering without jamming up space in their existing kitchen, which is a bee hive of activity almost all of the time. Perfect with the holidays around the corner.

The Southern Soul Food truck is planning to make its debut at the St Simons Island Food and Spirits festival coming Octber 4-8, 2017. “It’s the perfect time of the year.” chef says “Not too hot, not too cool.” That week, they will be hosting FIREBOX, a BBQ Masters event featuring BBQ from all over the South. Guest Q Masters will include Home Team from Charleston, Nashville’s Peg Leg Porker, B’s Cracklin from Savannah, and 17th Street BBQ from Illinois.
