Random Ruminations from the food scene April 2023

*The big story this week are the Savannah restaurants that were featured by Chef and TV Host Guy Fieri on his very popular Diners, Drive Ins and Dives franchise. The next episode featuring Savannah will air Friday April 28th at 9pm. You can read more details about his visit here.

*Two really nice fundraising events going on here in Savannah this weekend. The first is a Casino Night at The Perry Lane Hotel to benefit LLS. It’s Friday night. Find details here.

*The 2nd is a celebrity chef dinner Sunday night at 700 Drayton inside The Mansion on Forsyth Park. It’s a collaboration between Exec Chef Derek Simcik and some of his friends including former Top Chef contestants and Rob Newton from Fleeting down the street at the Thompson Hotel. All proceeds from this one going to No Kid Hungry. Find details here.

*We cannot thank you enough for the turnout at The 2023 Eat It and Like It Foodie Awards. The evening was beautiful, the food was amazing. Ask anyone who was there. We are already looking forward to next year.

*An update on the two openings seafood lovers are waiting on here in town. Desposito’s in Thunderbolt is moving along. Look for them mid-late Summer. Yes, those goal posts keep moving, but that’s life. Same deal with The Darling Oyster Bar. I spoke to chef last weekend about it and he wasn’t about to be pinned down to a range of dates. I would say late Summer there at the earliest. Read more about them here.

*Squirrel’s Pizza at the Eastern Wharf project is on final approach. Unlike those guys above, this is going to happen very soon. Keep an eye on social media.

*And for those of you who email looking for any updates on the rebuild of Pearl’s Saltwater Grille in Savannah, the last we heard was a plan/hope to rebuild. But that wasn’t definite and that is certainly not going to happen overnight.

*From the “Good Eats” department, I’ve only been once, but Dottie’s Market on Broughton Street could very well end up being downtown Savannah’s best lunch spot. Yeah, I said it. Even better? They are going to begin dinner service very soon. We will have more on them soon, but if you haven’t yet, you need to check them out. 207 West Broughton Street. This photo is their Roasted Chicken/Bacon/Avocado Club Sandwich.

*On Hilton Head Island, I popped in on Ruby Lee’s original location a couple of weeks ago and that place is as fabulous as it has ever been. I hate the term hidden gem, but this is most certainly one.

*Origin Coffee Bar slow rolled their brunch service a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks fantastic. 356 MLK, Jr Blvd.

*If you haven’t yet, you should try the coffee program at VEL, a shared workspace on Bull Street near 31st Street. They are very quietly some of the best South of Forsyth Park. You don’t have to be a member to grab one.

*Looking forward, for those of you who follow our television show (Saturdays at Noon on WTOC-TV) New episodes will run all Summer beginning this weekend. Set you DVR for a look at Savannah’s best BBQ (pictured above) and more.

*Last but not least, if you are looking for something to do next weekend, join us for the St Augustine Food and Wine Festival. Some tickets are still available including the main event next Saturday. Find more here.
