The return of Savannah’s best lobster roll
It doesn’t take a degree in history to remember that there was a lot going on with our food scene back in 2020-21. So many restaurants were trying to figure out how to survive, while still others could not figure a way to do so. Fair to say it was a mess. A miss that wasn’t limited to Savannah.
One of the highlights to come out of that period of time was a smallish lobster roll operation on MLK, Junior Blvd. It’s where we met Anthony Scarpulla. His was a one man show offering a tiny menu. The headliner was the lobster roll.
In a very short time, Anthony developed a following on MLK. In large part because because there was no one else doing fresh lobster rolls in Savannah and also because they were actually really good. So was the lobster mac and cheese.
Well, supply chain issues shot the cost of lobster through the roof. The last time I popped in on him, his sandwiches were up to $35 and we both knew that was unsustainable. He had to shut it down. Savannah’s best lobster roll was gone.
The good news is, now it’s back. Even if it is temporarily.
Anthony and a old friend moved down MLK and created VICI Rooftop, a great looking rooftop on Charlton Street just off of MLK. They’ve been there roughly 18 months and are doing well. Those guys are always tweaking their food menus, so it didn’t surprise me to see the return of the lobster roll. It was just a matter of cost. They’ve gone on the menu at VICI, and will likely be there through the Summer.
For those of you who will undoubtedly ask if they are Maine, Connecticut or New England style rolls, I can tell you is they were doing all of them at GB Lobster. What are they doing here? You can find ’em at VICI Wednesdays through Saturdays.
