If you’ve spent any time scrolling through food content from the Beaufort area, there’s a decent chance you’ve come across Shawn Hill. He goes by The Reluctant Foodie SC, and honestly, the name says it all — but maybe not in the way you’d expect.

Shawn isn’t trying to be your next food critic. He’s not pretending to have a refined palate or dropping phrases like “notes of truffle” after every bite. What he is doing is something a lot more relatable: eating lunch, bringing a camera, and being genuinely honest about what he thinks. That’s it. And people love him for it.

Shawn joined us recently for a conversation on the Eat It and Like It podcast, and I walked away liking the guy even more than I already did. He’s been shooting video and doing social media marketing in the Beaufort/Bluffton area for over twelve years — live streaming city council meetings, managing accounts for Visit Beaufort and the Beaufort Chamber, running a sign shop. The food content started as a side project and quietly turned into something real.

His origin story is pretty good too. He borrowed the “reluctant” angle from Eugene Levy’s travel show, The Reluctant Traveler, because it fit who he actually is — a guy who spent twenty-three years in quick service restaurants eating burgers and chicken strips, now venturing out and genuinely surprising himself. The Cuban sandwich? Never had one until last year. Fried green tomatoes? Tried them at a slider spot in Bluffton and was floored. Tomato bisque? Also a recent convert.

What makes him worth watching is exactly what he said himself: he’s not a critic, he’s just a guy telling you what he liked and what he didn’t. No ego, no pretense. In a world where everyone with a phone thinks they’re the next great food authority, that kind of honesty is genuinely refreshing.

He posts on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube — all under The Reluctant Foodie SC. Some of his videos have racked up sixty to eighty thousand views. Find him and hit follow. Then go get a Cuban at Sea Seas. You can listen to our entire chat for the podcast above.
