News and Notes April 20th

*Happy 420

*One of the big headlines around Savannah we have yet to discuss is a new chef at La Scala Ristorante. Simone Concas is the new man in charge there. He’s worked at a number of different country clubs in the area most recently, but was part of the kitchen for a time at Ill Pasticcio when that spot was the talk of the town downtown Savannah. Yes, that was 100 years ago, but he appears to have hit the ground running. We have a request in for an interview and should be chatting with him soon. He’s hoping to release new menu on April 27th.

*The other big headline in town is the opening of the highly anticipated Ardsley Station at the corner of Drayton and Victory in Savannah. I was invited for preview dinner last weekend. Read more about my experience here. They open Saturday at 4pm. No reservations. For starters they’ll only be open Thursdays through Sunday.

*And last but not least in the Savannah ‘new department’ is New Realm Brewing Company. They are now open downtown at Whitaker and State streets. I’ve sampled a bit of their food. Enjoyed it all. So far, their buffalo wings are my leader. I will get to the rest of the menu soon. Read more about them here.

*We got to spend a few minutes in the kitchen at Mrs Wilkes last week. See our story here.

*If you haven’t been to Savannah’s Common Thread, you are missing out. I have yet to have anyone tell me anything but “it was amazing.” It is. Already a top 3 restaurant in this city. Who the other two are we can mud wrestle about another time.

*You’ve undoubtedly heard about the labor shortage in the Food and Beverage industry. Our latest podcast episode is a great conversation with a local restaurant owner who is doing his best to balance it all. Click here to listen.

*Nunzio’s on Hilton Head Island is hosting a great looking Rombauer Wine Dinner on Wednesday, May 5th. Click here for details.

*Nood is a great noodle bar and fast casual Asian concept at Coligny Plaza on Hilton Head Island. You will Eat It and Like It. My chat with their owner Al right here.

*Around the South, tickets for the St Augustine Food and Wine Festival are still available. It’s coming up in a few weeks, May 6th-9th at the World Golf Village. There are a ton of different events to choose from over 4 days. See the full schedule here.

*Savannah favorite BBQ Master Bryan Furman has announced his plans to bring back his BBQ Empire in Atlanta. B’s Cracklin BBQ was dissolved last year. Get ready for Bryan Furman BBQ. Bryan closed purchase on a large lot in Atlanta’s Riverside section to build a brand new restaurant. He will also be returning to State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Read more here.

*One of our favorite steakhouses in the South is expanding again. Charleston’s Hall’s Chophouse has been dotting the landscape across the South with their wonderful food. This week they announced plans to open a location in Nashville, Tennessee.
