Forsyth Farmers’ Market to Host Annual Fall Harvest Picnic
The Forsyth Park Farmers Market’s biggest fundraiser of the year is moving to a new home, and it’s worth clearing your Sunday afternoon for. The Farm Picnic lands on October 11th, 3:00-5:30 PM, and for the first time it’s happening at Daffin Park instead of its longtime spot out at the old dairy farm.
I spoke with Asia Harold, Executive Director of the market, for our podcast to get the details. The market itself is celebrating 16 years in Savannah, and Asia’s been in charge for about four of them. In that time, the market has grown from around 50 vendors to 67 — a jump she credits partly to seasonal producers who come from farther out to bring things like citrus, persimmons, and peaches when they’re in season.
As for the venue change, it’s not about walking away from the dairy farm — it’s about visibility and elbow room. “It’s the same event just coming at you from a new location in Daffin Park, a little more central, a little more visible,” Asia told me. There’s more space to spread out, easier parking, and — my own two cents here — probably a lot fewer sand gnats than you’d get closer to the marsh.
The picnic itself makes for a great afternoon: pumpkin painting and youth activities for the kids, live music from Skip Jennings and the Fractions, and food from local favorites like Kayak Café, Green Truck, and The 1540 Room, plus Farm Hospitality grilling up burgers and dogs from the Strange Bird Food Truck. Service Brewing is pouring, and it’s all vegetarian and vegan friendly. Every bit of that — food, drinks, music, activities — is included in your ticket. You can listen to the full podcast above.
What makes this one worth supporting is what it funds. This isn’t just about keeping Saturday mornings in the park running. As Asia put it, “It’s our produce prescription program, which allows low wealth individuals at risk for diet-related chronic illnesses to access fresh fruits and vegetables as a form of medicine.” It also covers SNAP/EBT enrollment help and food distribution to local pantries — the kind of behind-the-scenes work that keeps Savannah’s local food system strong.
Tickets are capped around 100 and go until they’re sold out — grab them on Eventbrite or at ForsythFarmersMarket.com. If you’ve been going to the picnic for years at the dairy farm, don’t skip it just because the location changed. Come see what Daffin Park brings to the table, eat some good food under the oaks, and support a market that’s clearly still growing.
