Brunswick’s South of Heaven announces closing

We’ve said it here many many times. Restaurants come and restaurants go. Sometimes when they go, it has nothing to do with how good or bad the food is.

Exhibit A is the latest example. Brunswick’s South of Heaven BBQ -one of the best BBQ joints on the Georgia coast- announced this week that they are closing the doors on their brick and mortar restaurant in the heart of town. The announcement came Wednesday night via social media. The statement reading in part:

“After leaving Carrollton, Georgia due to COVID, we, like many other small businesses, made a promise to ourselves to find joy and peace in our lives. While we have come a long way, but we have decided that the time has come to hit the brakes.”

-Judd and Kate Foster – South of Heaven BBQ

The statement went on to say they would be focusing on their quality of life and their little boy. They thanked their supporters and said they’d still be available for catering and maybe some pop up events. Only their brick and mortar on Altama Avenue in Brunswick would be closing. Their last day is Saturday, April 8th.

South of Heaven BBQ

South of Heaven was the epitome of ‘mom and pop’ operation. With Judd lighting his smokers every morning in the middle of the night and Kate running their kitchen with whatever consistent help they could find. The quality of the product speaks for itself. They had regular traffic coming down from Savannah. Yes, it is that good.

The good news is, the Fosters appear to be staying in the Golden Isles area. What comes next? We’ll keep you posted. Hopefully, we will see this BBQ again down the road.
