Best of 2024: The Lowcountry
Part 2 of a series highlighting our favorite eats in 2024.
Sunday: Best of 2024 - The South
Monday: Best of 2024 - The Lowcountry
Tuesday: Best of 2024 - Savannah
Around here, the growth of Savannah’s food scene gets all of the attention both regionally and nationally. Deservedly so. However, it should be noted that the food scenes in both Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, South Carolina have developed quite nicely in their own right. Some of the best meals we’ve enjoyed for the year as a whole were in the Carolina Lowcountry. Some highlights we share here. Our best of 2024. Once again, as is always the case, these are lists, not rankings.
Links American Grill – Harbortown
I have no trouble sharing that Links is one of my top 2 or 3 favorites on the island. I’ve never had a meal there that just wasn’t exceptional. The last time I was there was no different. We enjoyed a wonderful A5 Wagyu Tartare as an app and one of the most perfect New York Strip steaks I’ve had in quite a while. Everything about Links just works for me. From the food to the wine list to the scene on the 9th green on their world famous golf course. I’m not even a golfer. However, when the weather is right and you can sit outside, it just makes for a wonderful experience. A top notch restaurant on the island for sure.
Olive and Fig Mediterranean Kitchen
I’ve been eating at Olive and Fig in Bluffton since they opened a number of years ago. I’ve always enjoyed it. Lunch or Dinner, it is always excellent. Fall of 2024 I had a routine lunch at Olive and Fig and was just blown away by the freshness of everything on the table. Dishes I had enjoyed before were better than they had ever been. Munjid Yusif and his wife Tammy are sticklers for the attention to detail at Olive and Fig, I know this. But this particular lunch was different. The kebobs, the salads, the hummus, the Shawarmas. That day was among the best I’d ever had, anywhere. Most locals know all about Olive and Fig (Photo above). If you don’t and you love quality Mediterranean flavors, then it should be a must try for you.
Tin and Tallow Food Truck -Various locations
In the big picture, Tin and Tallow has been around for over a year. But I didn’t get to try it until my gal pal Nicky put a plain white paper bag in front of me late one night back in February 2024. I had already had dinner than evening, but the gauntlet had been dropped. “You’ve gotta try this” she said. Second dinner, I suppose.
I had heard about the burgers coming out of the Tin and Tallow food truck for a minute, but that night was my first time. I can tell you it wasn’t my last time because they are every bit as good as I had been told they were. In a fairly short amount of time, Tin and Tallow has pushed its way to the front of the line when it comes to burgers in the area. Some people I know set their weekly dinner plans around when and where that truck is going to be parked. Bluffton’s Lot 9 Brewing is a popular spot for them, but you will find them all over the area. They are as creative as you will find around here. Deliciously perfect smash burgers. If you’ve not enjoyed one, you are missing out.
Chicken Piccata -Pomodori Too, Bluffton
For the record, you should know that Pomodori’s owner Amanda Cifaldi is one of my dearest friends. Card carrying certified bestie. Some people know this, most people don’t. Why am I sharing this with you? Well, because I’m attempting to diffuse any accusations of playing favorites with this list from jump. The Chicken Piccata at Pomodori is one of those dishes that-no matter how often I tell myself I am going to have something different on my next visit, I always end up with that one. Sometimes I let them talk me into preparing it with some spicy red pepper flakes for a fabulous kick. Either way, this dish just does for it me. Every time. A perfect blend of buttery and tangy. As I write this I’m trying to figure out when I can get back there again for more. Quarterly will have to do for now. The scene at Pomodori Too in Old Town is beautiful. The food makes for an excellent evening. Or you can call ahead and take some home. Either way, you will Eat It and Like It.
Also worthy of a mention here are Odd Bird Bakes, Hilton Head Social Bakery and Chez Georges Bistro.
